Scottish Cup Format and Schedule

Unlike the Scottish League Cup, the Scottish Cup is a straight knockout competition. It normally begins in mid-August and runs alongside the league season. The final usually takes place at the end of May, as the last game of the campaign before the summer break.

A total of 100 clubs enter the Scottish Cup each year, coming in at different stages depending on their position in the league pyramid. Those in the Scottish Premiership enter in the fourth round in January. Ties are drawn at random, with the winner progressing to the next round. If a game is drawn, then there will be a replay to determine who advances (up to and including the quarter-final stage). If the replay finishes level, extra time and penalties come into play. The semi-finals take place at a neutral venue, which is usually the same stadium that hosts the final – Hampden Park.

The prize on offer for the winner can lead to even more glory. Not only do they lift the trophy – which is the oldest association football trophy in the world - they also qualify for the following season’s UEFA Europa League.

Scottish Cup Holders

In the 2020/21 campaign the holders of the Scottish Cup were Celtic. The Hoops were champions in 2019/20, beating Hearts on penalties in the final at Hampden Park after the two played out a 3-3 draw. It was actually Celtic’s fourth successive Scottish Cup triumph, having also won in 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19.
