There are three automatic promotion places in League Two, with the teams finishing fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh, qualifying for the post-season playoffs.

As a result, four teams are relegated from League One each season to make way for the four promoted teams from League Two.

Regarding League Two relegation, only two teams lose their Football League status, as two teams are promoted from the National League each season.

Now that you know how it works, let’s look at the favourites to gain promotion from League Two in the 2024/25 season:

Walsall

The Saddlers have enjoyed a hugely impressive campaign so far and are the clear favourites to win promotion from League Two at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Manager Mat Sadler has put together a talented team of youngsters and will likely guide Walsall back to League One for the first time since the 2018/19 season, when they were relegated after finishing in 22nd place.

Doncaster Rovers

Under Grant McCann, Doncaster Rovers look like one of the most likely teams to join Walsall in League One next season. Rovers were a mid-table Championship team as recently as 2009-10, but they’ve been struggling on and off the field in recent years.

After a dreadful 2022-23 season in which they finished just above the League Two relegation spots, they were losing playoff semi-finalists last year. They will hope to avoid the playoffs this time around by sealing an automatic promotion spot.

Notts County

Notts County fans will struggle to hide their envy as their fierce rivals, Nottingham Forest, compete for a Champions League spot this season. But County, under popular head coach Stuart Maynard, is confident of securing promotion to the third tier of English football this season.

County are one of the oldest football teams in the world and many were shocked when they lost their Football League status at the end of the 2018-19 season. County haven’t been in the third tier since the 2014-15 season, so it will be a big step for the club if they can secure promotion this time around.

AFC Wimbledon

Owned by the fans and popular with football purists, many people look out for the Dons’ results each week and would love them to climb the football pyramid once again.

Current manager Johnnie Jackson has Wimbledon playing an attractive brand of football, and they’re in with a great chance of securing promotion this season.

The Dons made it to the Football League in the 2011-12 season after six promotions since 2002, and they hope to return to the third tier of English football with another promotion this time around.

Alongside Walsall, Doncaster, Notts County and Wimbledon, Bradford City, Crewe Alexandra, and Port Vale all fancy their chances of gaining promotion this year. Just outside the playoff spots, Salford City, Chesterfield, and Grimsby Town may also launch a late-season charge.
