The 2000 Guineas acts as a bellwether for the rest of the UK flat racing season, showcasing the finest three-year-old colts and fillies from the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and beyond.
The 2000 Guineas is one of the most iconic races in the British flat racing season. Its roots date back to April 1809, when the race was founded as a competition for three-year-olds only. The race was founded by the Jockey Club, with Sir Charles Bunbury having previously co-launched the Epsom Derby.
In the last two centuries of the 2000 Guineas, there have been so many three-year-old colts and fillies to make their mark, showcasing the prowess of both equine and human athletes.
Newmarket Racecourse is famed in British horseracing circles as the “Home of Racing,” and the 2000 Guineas is one of its biggest races. Newmarket Racecourse has two racetracks, and the 2000 Guineas is held on the Rowley Mile Course rather than the July Course.
Nestled in West Suffolk, Newmarket has been at the heart of equine excellence for centuries. The town boasts a high concentration of trainers and stables, which further cements Newmarket as a hub of flat racing pedigree.
Within 50 years of its inaugural race, the 2000 Guineas had firmly established itself as one of the most valuable races for up-and-coming three-year-olds. Today, it carries a six-figure prize purse of over £500,000, with more than half of the funds ring-fenced for the race winner.
There’s a string of ‘trial’ races held in the lead-up to the 2000 Guineas each year. These include the Craven Stakes and the Greenham Stakes. However, for some entrants, the 2000 Guineas acts as their first run of the flat racing season. In fact, the very best prospects use the 2000 Guineas as their ‘trial’ for the Epsom Derby later in the year.
Winning both the 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby has long been considered one of the biggest feats for any three-year-old thoroughbred. The last horse to win both races was Camelot back in 2012.
Camelot was the 15/8 favourite in the race and looked to be struggling in the opening exchanges. However, he would go on to advance through the field to take a narrow victory by a neck ahead of French Fifteen.
Interestingly, form in the 2000 Guineas isn’t always a sure-fire indicator of being Derby-ready. In 2023, Auguste Rodin finished 12th in the 2000 Guineas but went on to land the Epsom Derby.
The 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas have offered equal prize money for their entrants since 2001. Currently, the prize money for both races stands at £525,000, with £297,728 awarded to the winner.
Ruling Court won the 2025 2000 Guineas under William Buick for Charlie Appleby. It was the stable’s second consecutive 2000 Guineas win and Appleby’s third in four years. Buick repeated Donnacha O’Brien’s feat of 2018 and 2019 by winning consecutive races on different horses, thanks to his win on Notable Speech in 2024.
2024 saw a big upset as the favourite, City of Troy (likened to Frankel), finished ninth out of the 11 runners. Notable Speech was a 16/1 shot when he romped home under Buick.
At the 2000 Guineas in 2023, the Andrew Balding-trained Chaldean stormed to victory with veteran jockey Frankie Dettori on board. He greeted the winner’s enclosure with his customary victory leap. It was Dettori’s first 2000 Guineas win since 2016 but a second win in four years for Balding’s stable.
The previous year, Coroebus won the 2000 Guineas for his owners, Godolphin, who themselves are based in Newmarket. Later that year, Coroebus would go on to land the St. James’s Palace Stakes too. However, at the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, he was fatally injured mid-race.
In 2020, the 2000 Guineas saw the race time record smashed, with Andrew Balding’s Kameko storming to victory in 1 minute and 34 seconds with Oisin Murphy on board.
It’s also worth noting that the number of fillies winning the 2000 Guineas is few and far between. In fact, the last filly to win the race was Garden Path, all the way back in 1944. Although the 2000 Guineas is open to both colts and fillies, in most cases, the highest-rated fillies will be reserved for the filly-only 1000 Guineas.
The biggest outsider to win the 2000 Guineas to date was Rockavon, who landed the win in 1961 at huge odds of 66/1.
Aidan O’Brien remains the master of Newmarket, having trained no fewer than ten 2000 Guineas winners. O’Brien’s Ballydoyle Stables remains a conveyor belt for flat racing talent, with most of O’Brien’s runners always respected in the 2000 Guineas odds.
Charlie Appleby has also enjoyed recent success in the 2000 Guineas, training Ruling Court (2025), Notable Speech (2024), and Coroebus (2022) to victories. Appleby also enjoyed success in the 2025 1000 Guineas as Desert Flower romped home under William Buick.
