Epsom Derby Odds

The Derby Stakes, or the Epsom Derby, is one of England's oldest and most prestigious races, drawing tens of thousands of spectators every summer.

First run on Thursday, 4th May 1780, the Epsom Derby is also one of the UK’s five classic races. It remains the epicentre of British horse racing’s historically important Triple Crown too, preceded by the 2,000 Guineas and followed by the St Leger.

At Parimatch, we offer extensive coverage of the Epsom Derby and also Epsom Oaks odds along with it. But what do you need to know about this iconic race, and what are the key betting insights from the most recent renewals?

What is the Derby?

This long-standing event is a G1 flat horse race in Surrey every year. Its status as one of the UK’s ‘classic races’ puts it on a par with the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, the Oaks (also held at Epsom) and the St Leger Stakes.

The race is run at the left-handed Epsom Downs Racecourse and has been ever since its inception in 1780. Between 1915 and 1918, and 1940 and 1945, the race moved, with the impact of the First and Second World Wars prompting its relocation to Newmarket.

The race is contested over one mile, four furlongs and 10 yards (or 2,423 metres), and it’s open to three-year-old colts and fillies. The weight requirement is 9 stone and 0lbs, while there’s a 3lb allowance for competing fillies.

The Epsom Derby is currently the richest race in the UK, with a total purse of £2,000,000. The winner collects a cheque of £909,628.

When Does the Derby Take Place?

Typically, the Epsom Derby is held on the first Saturday in June, an annual event and the fourth of the scheduled classic flat races in the UK season.

The Oaks is a classic race that’s usually held the day before the Derby and is one of the main events of the Derby Festival, open exclusively to three-year-old fillies.

2025 will once again see the 246th annual running of the Epsom Derby, scheduled for Saturday, June 7th. The runners will arrive under the starter’s order at 16:30.

Our Epsom Derby Betting Insights

At Parimatch, we also provide highly competitive Epsom Derby odds as part of our wider horse racing coverage. However, plenty of runners usually take part in a highly competitive field when Derby Day arrives, so picking a winner or placed finisher is much easier said than done.

The good news is that you can draw insights from past performances and the trends produced by previous winners. So, here’s our take on the most recent renewals of the Derby and how they can help you pick the winner of the next Derby.

Look for Group 1 Experience

Group 1 experience is a useful benchmark when picking an Epsom Derby winner. It is often a key consideration in high-quality or ‘classic’ races, as there’s a significant gap in quality between Group 1 and Group 2 events.

That said, Anthony Van Dyck (2019) is the only horse since Camelot in 2012 to have won a pre-Derby G1 race, so you shouldn’t necessarily rule out horses that have placed or even run well in G1 outings before their appearance at Epsom.

Perhaps more importantly, look for horses that have a previous class 1 flat race triumph under them before starting in the Derby.

For example, Lambourn won at Chester the month before his 2025 Derby success, City of Troy won at Newmarket late in 2023 before his 2024 Derby triumph, and Auguste Rodin won class 1 meets at Leopardstown and Doncaster in 2022 before triumphing in the 2022 Derby.

Consider the Jockey

Given that the Epsom Derby is restricted to three-year-old colts and fillies, you can’t look to past fields to pick your winner. But you can look at a jockey’s success at Epsom Downs before picking your winner.

Ryan Moore is the most prolific jockey at Epsom Downs and has won the Derby four times (2010, 2013, 2023, and 2024). Additionally, Moore has won the Oaks five times (2025, 2022, 2020, 2016, and 2010).

Moore often rides for Aidan O’Brien, so check which horse he will be on ahead of this year’s Derby, and you could be onto a winner, particularly if Moore has gone well at other races this season so far.

Look to the Stable for Previous Flat Racing Success

Aidan O’Brien’s runners are always respected in the published Epsom Derby odds, as he has trained 11 winners and is the only man to do so. With consecutive wins in 2023, 2024, and 2025, it’s impossible to rule out another O’Brien success this year.

2026 Epsom Derby Favourites

With the field yet to be confirmed, here’s a look at the runners most likely to go well in the 2026 Epsom Derby:

  • Pierre Bonnard: Aidan O’Brien’s Pierre Bonnard is heavily fancied to win the 2026 Derby. He won on three of his four outings in 2025, including the Group 1 Saint-Cloud Stakes in October, and leads the ante-post market at the time of writing.
  • Hawk Mountain: Another O’Brien chance for the 2026 Derby is Hawk Mountain, who went brilliantly in the Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster in October 2025 under Ronan Whelan, showing everyone what he’s capable of in Group 1 races.
  • Puerto Rico: Puerto Rico, another from the O’Brien stable, won superbly in the Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at ParisLongchamp in 2025 to establish himself at the top of the ante-post market ahead of the 2026 Derby.
