Epsom Derby Betting Odds

The 2027 Derby Festival takes place at Epsom Downs on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 June.

Friday is Ladies Day, featuring the Oaks. Derby Day follows on Saturday, with the main race currently scheduled for 4.00pm.

The Derby is run over one mile, four furlongs and 10 yards. Epsom’s climb, downhill section, sharp Tattenham Corner and cambered home straight ask far more than a simple question of speed.

A horse needs to stay the distance, change direction without losing balance and still produce an effort after entering the straight.

The race is open to three-year-old colts and fillies, with fillies receiving a weight allowance. Geldings cannot run. Since 2003, the maximum Derby field has been limited to 20 horses.

The Epsom Oaks odds page covers the fillies-only Classic held over the same course and distance one day earlier.

There is no settled 2027 favourite yet.

The horses eligible for the race are still two-year-olds during the summer of 2026. Much of the relevant form will come during the autumn, followed by the Guineas and recognised Derby trials next spring.

Early prices can move sharply after one strong performance. A two-year-old may shorten following a Group race victory, only for questions over stamina to appear when it begins racing over longer distances.

Others emerge much later. Not every Derby winner starts its three-year-old campaign near the top of the ante-post market.

Check whether the selection has a confirmed Epsom target before betting. Some leading horses may instead be aimed at the French Derby, Irish Derby or a shorter-distance race.

If no prices are displayed at the top of the page, the market will appear once Parimatch opens or refreshes its Epsom Derby betting odds.

The official Epsom Derby runners won’t be known until much closer to the race.

Initial entries can contain dozens of horses. The list is gradually reduced through scratching stages, supplementary entries and final declarations before Derby Day.

A prominent name in the winter market is therefore only a possible runner. Fitness, form and running plans all have time to change.

Trainers with several candidates may also wait until the spring trials before deciding which horse travels to Epsom. One stable could send multiple runners, while another may withdraw its only entry after an unsuitable preparation.

Rather than treating every quoted horse as equally likely to appear, look for clear comments from connections and evidence that the Derby trip is part of the plan.

Several spring races help shape the Derby market. None offers a perfect copy of what horses will experience at Epsom.

The 2000 Guineas

The 2000 Guineas is run over one mile at Newmarket and forms the opening leg of the traditional colts’ Triple Crown.

It shows whether a horse has the pace to compete at Classic level. Stamina remains unanswered.

Camelot was the last horse to complete the 2000 Guineas and Derby double, doing so in 2012. Auguste Rodin later showed the other side of the argument, recovering from a poor Guineas performance to win at Epsom in 2023.

The Chester Vase and Dee Stakes

Chester’s tight, left-handed course allows Derby candidates to practise racing around pronounced turns.

The Chester Vase is run over approximately one and a half miles, while the Dee Stakes is slightly shorter. Both can reveal whether a horse settles properly and handles a more technical course.

Lambourn won the Chester Vase before taking the 2025 Derby. Benvenuto Cellini then won the same trial in 2026, although he was withdrawn at the start at Epsom after becoming caught in the stalls.

One result does not create a fixed pattern.

The Dante Stakes

York’s Dante Stakes is often regarded as one of the strongest British Derby trials.

It is run over roughly one mile and two and a half furlongs, leaving the leading horses to prove that they can stay another quarter-mile at Epsom. The Jockey Club records 12 Dante winners going on to win the Derby since 1960.

York is also flatter than Epsom. A smooth Dante performance may establish a horse’s class without resolving questions about balance or the Derby course.

Lingfield and Leopardstown

Lingfield’s Derby Trial is useful because the track is left-handed and includes a downhill turn into the straight. The distance is just short of the full Derby trip.

Leopardstown provides another established route for Irish-trained horses. Both trials produced Derby runners in 2026, with Maltese Cross winning at Lingfield and James J Braddock taking the Leopardstown contest. They later finished second and third behind Christmas Day at Epsom.

That was a strong set of clues. Future renewals may unfold differently.

Stamina

A horse bred to excel over a mile may still show enough class to win a trial over further. The final two furlongs at Epsom are harder to bluff.

Look at how the runner finishes its races. Is it still responding after the winning post, or does its stride begin to shorten?

Pedigree can help, particularly before a horse has attempted the distance. It should support what happens on the racecourse rather than replace it.

Balance and Course Suitability

Epsom doesn’t allow horses to travel in a straight line for long.

They climb during the early stages, descend towards Tattenham Corner and meet a camber in the home straight. An inexperienced horse can lose rhythm before the decisive part of the race begins. The course climb during the first half-mile has been compared in height with Nelson’s Column.

Previous experience at Epsom is uncommon among Derby runners. Evidence from Chester, Lingfield or another turning track can still be useful.

The Draw

The draw should be considered alongside field size and running style.

A stall that suits a prominent runner may create a different problem for a horse expected to settle near the back. Jockeys must find a position without covering unnecessary ground or becoming trapped as the field approaches the turn.

There is no stall that produces the winner every year. Derby winners have come from low, middle and high draws since starting stalls were introduced in 1967.

Going Conditions

Epsom can ride very differently after a wet week.

Softer turf places greater emphasis on stamina and may suit a horse with proven form under similar conditions. Faster ground can expose a heavy action or place more value on tactical speed.

Christmas Day’s connections felt the rain helped their colt before his 2026 victory. That doesn’t mean the next Derby should be approached in the same way.

The Likely Pace

A large field does not guarantee a strong gallop.

Some Derby runners prefer to lead. Others need cover to settle. If only one horse is willing to go forward, the race can become tactical and place more emphasis on acceleration.

Review the field after final declarations. Pace is difficult to judge properly while the likely runners are still changing.

The available Epsom Derby betting markets will depend on how close the race is.

Win Betting

A win bet requires your horse to finish first.

The potential return is calculated from the stake and the odds accepted when the wager is placed, subject to the market’s settlement terms.

Ante-Post Betting

Derby ante-post odds allow you to bet before the final field has been declared.

An early price may be larger than the price available on Derby Day. There is also a greater chance that the horse won’t run.

Unless non-runner money-back terms are clearly included, an ante-post selection may be settled as a loser if it misses the race.

Each-Way Betting

An each-way wager is split into two equal bets. One part backs the horse to win and the other backs it to finish within the advertised places.

A £10 each-way bet therefore costs £20.

Place terms can change according to field size and any active enhancement. Check the number of places and the fraction shown on the betslip before confirming.

Forecast and Tricast Betting

A straight forecast requires the first two finishers in the correct order. A reverse forecast covers either order.

A tricast asks for the first three horses in sequence. These markets are difficult in a competitive Classic, especially when traffic and the draw influence the race.

Derby and Oaks Bets

Markets linking the Derby with Friday’s Oaks may become available nearer the festival.

The two races use the same course and distance, but they have separate fields. A trainer or jockey having a strong weekend does not guarantee that both selections will win.

Christmas Day won the 2026 Derby for Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ronan Whelan.

The colt moved past stablemate Action entering the final three furlongs and beat Maltese Cross by two and three-quarter lengths. James J Braddock finished third.

The result gave O’Brien a record-extending 12th Derby victory and his 50th success in a British Classic.

Christmas Day started at 7/1, but that price belongs to the completed 2026 race. It has no direct bearing on the live Epsom Derby odds for 2027.

• 2024: City Of Troy, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore.
• 2023: Auguste Rodin, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore.
• 2022: Desert Crown, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Richard Kingscote. 

Aidan O’Brien’s recent run is impossible to ignore, but trainer records should not become the entire betting argument. The individual horse still needs the form, stamina and balance required for Epsom.

The first Derby was held on 4 May 1780. Diomed won the inaugural race, which was originally staged over one mile before being extended to a mile and a half in 1784.

The race remained at Epsom apart from wartime transfers to Newmarket between 1915 and 1918 and again from 1940 to 1945.

Lester Piggott remains the most successful Derby jockey with nine victories. His first came aboard Never Say Die in 1954, while Teenoso supplied his ninth in 1983.

Aidan O’Brien holds the trainers’ record after taking his total to 12 with Christmas Day in 2026.
