Introducing the Big Bash League: Teams, Format, & History

The Big Bash League was launched ahead of the 2011/12 season, replacing its predecessor, the Twenty20 Big Bash.

Though similar, the original Big Bash featured the six Sheffield Shield state cricket teams. The franchise model adopted by Cricket Australia mirrors that of the Indian Premier League, allowing for greater investment and broader international interest in the tournament.

This is a T20 competition, so teams bat and field for one innings of up to 20 overs. The team with the most runs at the end of their innings wins the match.

The following eight franchises compete each season in the Big Bash League:

The tournament format has changed several times since the league’s inception. Today, it’s a double round-robin followed by knockout finals. The top two teams in the league go straight to the qualifier match, while the third- and fourth-placed teams contest a knockout game.

The challenger match between the loser of the qualifier and the winner of the knock-out precedes the final, which is held at different stadia across Australia.

When is the 2026/27 Big Bash League?

The next Big Bash League is scheduled from mid-December 2026 until the end of January 2027. You can check for the fixture dates and the grand final schedule in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

Most Successful Teams in Big Bash League History

Perth Scorchers are the most successful team in Big Bash League history and are the only franchise to have won the tournament six times.

Their most recent triumph came in the 2025/26 competition under captain Ashton Turner and coach Adam Voges. Aussie batsman Finn Allen top-scored in the 25/26 season with 466 runs for the Scorchers, who drafted Englishmen Laurie Evans and David Payne at the start of the season.

The Sydney Sixers are the next-most-successful team in the Big Bash League, with three titles. They were the losing finalists in 2025/26, going down by six wickets to the Scorchers.

The Sixers have an all-star squad that includes Aussie legends Mitch Starc and Steve Smith, as well as overseas talents Babar Azam and Sam Curran. If the 25/26 season didn’t coincide with an Ashes Tour, the Sixers may have been in better shape.

The only other team to have won the Big Bash League more than once is Brisbane Heat. The Heat are led by Usman Khawaja and have Aussie Test players Michael Neser and Marnus Labuschagne in their ranks.
