Champions League Qualification and Format

The UEFA Champions League received a major upheaval at the start of the 2024/25 season. The initial groups of four were replaced by a single league, and the competition was increased from 32 to 36 teams.

Today, 36 teams qualify for the league phase of the tournament, following the pre-season qualification rounds. Each team plays eight matches in the league phase, and the top eight teams at the end of the initial fixtures progress to the round of 16.

The teams that finish ninth to 24th in the table compete in a playoff round, with the eight winners joining the top-ranked teams in the knockout rounds.

From there, the competition follows its old format, featuring two-legged knockout rounds (home and away matches) until the final at a neutral venue. If the scores are tied at the end of the final, extra time and penalties will be used to determine a winner.
