2026 Open Championship Preview

First contested in 1860, the Open Championship is the oldest golf major and one of the most iconic competitions in the world of sports. But how can you bet on golf? What odds and markets are available?

Read on to learn how to bet on this year’s Open Championship at Parimatch Sportsbook and gain some insights as we preview this event.

When and Where is the 2026 Open Championship?

The 154th Open Championship will be held at Royal Birkdale in Merseyside, England, between 12 and 19 July 2026.

The Open returns to England for the first time since Brian Harman won at Royal Liverpool in 2023, and it’s the first tournament at Royal Birkdale since the memorable 2017 contest, in which Jordan Spieth won by three shots from Matt Kuchar.

Open Championship: Current Holder & Previous Champions

American Scottie Scheffler became the “Champion Golfer of the Year” by winning the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland in 2025.

He became the fourth American champion in five years, following Xander Schauffele (2024), Brian Harman (2023), and Collin Morikawa (2021). Australian Cam Smith was the 2022 winner at St Andrews, Scotland.

Here’s a list of the previous ten Open Championship winners, which may influence your selections ahead of the 2025 tournament:

Year Venue Winner
2025 Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland Scottie Scheffler
2024 Royal Troon, Scotland Xander Schauffele
2023 Royal Liverpool, England Brian Harman
2022 St Andrews, Scotland Cameron Smith
2021 Royal St George’s, England Colin Morikawa
2020 No event N/A
2019 Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland Shane Lowry
2018 Carnoustie, Scotland Francesco Molinari
2017 Royal Birkdale, England Jordan Spieth
2016 Royal Troon, Scotland Henrik Stenson
2015 St Andrews, Scotland Zach Johnson

The last time a player won back-to-back Open Championships was in 2007 and 2008 when Padraig Harrington won at Carnoustie and Royal Birkdale.

Interestingly, Harrington’s 2007 win stopped Tiger Woods from winning three consecutive Open Championships after the American triumphed at St Andrews in 2005 and Royal Liverpool in 2006.

2026 Open Championship Favourites

As we look ahead to the Open Championship 2026, who are the favourites in the field? With much golf to be played between now and the opening tee shot at Royal Birkdale, here are the current favourites for the 2026 Open (odds are subject to change):

Scottie Scheffler

World number one, Scottie Scheffler, is the favourite for the 2026 Open Championship. The world number one won his first Open Championship in 2025 with a four-stroke victory over Harris English at Royal Portrush, and there’s no doubt he’s capable of winning again in 2026.

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy’s only Open Championship triumph came at Royal Liverpool in 2014, so he knows what it takes to win in Merseyside. The Northern Irishman completed the Grand Slam in 2025 by winning the Masters at Augusta National, but he’s far from finished yet. He’s undoubtedly Europe’s best hope of a winner at the 2026 Open Championship.

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm has endured a tough couple of seasons since his 2023 Masters victory. His departure to the LIV Golf Tour came as a surprise to many, as he was on track to become one of the most successful European players on the PGA Tour.

Rahm finished second in the 2023 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, so he’s one to watch ahead of this year’s competition.

Xander Schauffele

After a double-major-winning 2024, Xander was far from his best in 2025. Still, the Florida native is always there or thereabouts at the business end of major tournaments, and he could be a great option for an each-way bet in 2026.

Aside from world number one Scheffler, he’s the pick of the Americans ahead of this year’s tournament.

Tommy Fleetwood

Tommy Fleetwood is an exceptionally talented golfer, but he has struggled to deliver titles throughout his career. In 2025, he finally won his first PGA Tour title, securing the Tour Championship.

Though he’s never won the Open, he often performs well, and his best finish was in 2019, when he finished in second place to Shane Lowry.

Golf Betting Options & Markets

As introduced above, the most straightforward way to bet on this year's Open Championship is to pick the golfer you think will win outright. You can also place an each-way bet (at double the stake), and if your chosen player finishes in the top five places, you will still win a payout.

We will also release competition specials, including odds boosts and other promotions, ahead of the Open Championship, offering great value. Be sure to check these in the lead-up to the tournament to lock in great prices.

Other betting options include round betting and wagers on whether you think a specific player will make the cut. After the first two rounds, only the top 70 players will make it to the weekend. This is an attractive bet when backing an outsider rather than betting on them to win the competition outright.
