How do you win a UFC fight?

The rules around how to win a UFC fight against an opponent are clearly defined by the sport’s ruling body, with fighters working towards either a points-based win or a win by submission. Three independent UFC judges adjudicate all fights. Each has a different physical viewpoint into the Octagon to assist with making calls on different moves and submission holds from the fighters. Each fighter can receive a maximum score of ten points per round (based on either three or five rounds, each lasting five minutes), in line with each judge’s decision. To win the fight outright, a fighter must earn ten points, and their opponent must get less than ten. Judges make their decisions on where to award points to fighters based on different in-fight criteria. These include the fighter’s ability to successfully:

  • Grapple with their opponent;
  • Strike out in an attacking motion;
  • Control their immediate fighting area and;
  • Ability to defend themselves from incoming attacks during the bout.

Fighters are also judged on where they have spent most of the round. For example, how many seconds they have been pinned down to the canvas by their opponent. If both fighters stay on their feet for most of the round, the amount of successful strikes is the main judging criteria.

Who to bet on for MMA? A Quick MMA Betting Guide

Being informed is the best way to make your bet. Here's a quick intro on what to look out for when choosing the fighter you'll bet on. It's very common to bet on Method of Victory when you bet on MMA, but before placing your bet, you'll need to size up the two opponents in the ring. Here are certain factors to consider:

  • Look at their strengths and weaknesses, and consider factors such as their recent performance and the matchup.
  • Keep an eye on the fighters' weight class, as some fighters are more successful in certain weight classes than others.
  • Look at the fighters' style of fighting, some fighters are better at striking, others at grappling and some are good at both.

Is UFC easy to bet on?

An easy bet is a safe bet. One of the most common wagers to make is round betting. You don't have to bet on a specific fighter, you're simply betting on when you think the match will finish between the two. But different events and championships have different rounds rules. Non-championship fights normally go for 3 x 5-minute rounds, while championship fights go for 5 x 5-minute rounds. This is agreed upon by the MMA Unified Rules which most championships agree to.
