Every cricket fan in the world looks forward to the Ashes. This gruelling five-test series is contested between England and Australia biannually.

The current holder of the Ashes only needs to draw the series to retain the urn, while the other team must win the series to regain it.

Australia have a better record in the series than England and have an excellent record at home – they’ve only lost the Ashes once in Australia since 1986-87, highlighting just how tough England find it Down Under.

The Ashes: Cricket’s Greatest Rivalry

The Ashes is the most famous cricket series in the world, contested biannually by England and Australia. The first series was held in 1882-83 in Australia, and there have been 73 series to date.

Australia have won 34 and retained the urn six times from tied series, while England have won 32 and only retained the urn once.

The series got its name when a British newspaper reported that English cricket had died following Australia’s 1882 win at The Oval, suggesting that the ashes of the game would be taken to Australia in a mystical urn.

As such, the 1882-83 series in Australia became known as England’s quest to regain the ashes, and a small terracotta urn, believed to contain the ashes of a burnt cricket bail, was awarded to the winner.

The rivalry is steeped in history, intrigue, and often controversy, and has cemented itself as one of the greatest sporting events in the world. The contest is always heated, and although occasional whitewashes occur, the contrasting styles of both teams make it a must-watch for any cricket fan.

Why is The Ashes played between Australia and England?

The Ashes is a contest that was born from a unique point in the history of cricket.

Before 1882, England consistently beat Australia in Test cricket. But in 1882, Australia won their first Test victory on English soil at the Oval. The British paper The Sporting Times declared in horror that English cricket was finished, and that "the body will be cremated, and the ashes taken to Australia". The idea of the Ashes was born.

In 1883, when the English returned to Australia, English captain Ivo Bligh vowed to "regain those ashes". When England won, Bligh was presented with an urn containing the ashes of a burnt bail. This back-and-forth contest has continued to this day, with the winner taking home the famous terracotta urn containing the illustrious ashes.
