The EFL Cup is the first real piece of silverware of the season available to English football league sides, and while it’s not the most prestigious trophy on offer, it’s a great opportunity for clubs to secure European qualification.
The competition has been sponsored by many brands over the years and is currently known as the Carabao Cup.
At Parimatch Sportsbook, you can back the team you think will win the Carabao Cup at any stage of the campaign. Discover the current Carabao Cup outright odds and find out how to back your winner ahead of this year’s Wembley final.
The EFL Cup, known for sponsorship reasons as the Carabao Cup, is one of two major domestic cup competitions in England, alongside the FA Cup.
It begins in August every year, with the final held in February or March, depending on scheduling. As such, it’s the first opportunity for English teams to secure silverware, and the winner automatically qualifies for the following season’s Europa League.
The competition was founded in 1960 as the Football League Cup, with Aston Villa winning the first trophy in 1961. Liverpool are the most decorated team in League Cup history, having won ten titles.
Newcastle United famously won the League Cup in 2025, securing their first major silverware since 1969. It was a momentous achievement by the Magpies and the first League Cup in the club’s history.
Before Newcastle’s triumph, the League Cup was dominated for years by the so-called top teams in the English game.
Only Swansea City (2013) and Birmingham City (2011) had bucked the trend, with Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea winning every other League Cup since 2010.
The Carabao Cup is contested exclusively by teams in the English football league pyramid, so 92 teams enter the tournament every August.
The competition begins at the start of August with a preliminary round. The two lowest-ranked clubs not relegated from League Two the previous season face two newly promoted teams, with only two advancing to the competition proper.
Then, the first round is contested by 20 teams from League Two, 24 from League One, and 24 from the EFL Championship.
In the second round, the Premier League teams not involved in European competitions enter the EFL Cup, before being joined by the remaining Premier League teams in the third round.
All ties until the semi-final are played as single knockout matches. If the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes, the games go straight to penalties to determine the winner.
At the semi-final stage, the fixtures are two-legged affairs, with each team playing one match at home and one match away. The two winners of the semi-finals then meet at Wembley Stadium for the League Cup final.
Extra time and penalties are used in the League Cup final if the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes.
You will find the latest Carabao Cup outright odds at the top of this page. You can bet on the winner of this tournament at any stage of the season, from the first round right up to the final at Wembley.
This is a win-only market, so your team must lift the trophy at Wembley for you to receive a payout.
