The PDC World Championship is the leading tournament in the sport of darts. Organised by the Professional Darts Corporation, or the PDC, it takes place annually at Alexandra Palace in London. Action begins in December and finishes in January, when the latest world champion will be unveiled.
The PDC World Championship, which runs over Christmas and New Year, has become iconic since its launch in 1994. Phil Taylor remains the most successful darts player of all time, winning the tournament fourteen times before his career ended.
2026 is a big year for the tournament, with the prize pool doubling from £2,500,000 to £5,000,000. The winner will now walk away with £1,000,000, upping the ante significantly.
In 2024, Luke Humphries triumphed in the PDC World Championship final, while teenage sensation Luke Littler won the 2025 PDC crown. You can bet on every fixture at the PDC World Championship at Parimatch Sportsbook.
The reigning champion heading into the 2026 PDC World Championship is Luke Littler, the most exciting young player in world darts. At 18, he already has five PDC wins under his belt, and he has his eyes set on a second PDC Darts Championship triumph later this year.
However, Littler won’t have it all his way, and the PDC World Championship title hasn’t been defended successfully since Gary Anderson achieved the feat in 2015 and 2016.
In terms of favourites, the form shown throughout the season and players who have won events count. Luke Humphries, the 2024 winner, is the world number and the most formidable opponent Littler will face in his defence.
Three-time champion Michael van Gerwen will also be in the conversation, as will two-time winner Peter Wright. Below, we look at some of the names to consider betting on ahead of the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship:
Littler is the ante-post favourite to retain his PDC World Championship title. In 2025, he followed up his World Championship win, triumphing at the UK Open, and finished second in Premier League Darts. The 18-year-old is the one to beat this year.
It’s no surprise to see 2024 champion Luke Humphries installed among the early favourites to win the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship. Humphries has been imperious recently, winning the Premier League and the Masters in 2025. He will set his sights on Littler’s crown when he travels to Alexandra Palace.
Despite losing to Littler in the 2025 final, Dutch ace Michael van Gerwen has always been one of the major contenders at Ally Pally. The three-time world champion hasn’t got his hands on the Sid Waddell Trophy since 2019 and will be looking to right some wrongs in 2026.
James Wade has been around the block in the world of darts. Apart from the PDC World Championship, the Englishman has won almost every major darts tournament. He’s reached the semi-finals on four occasions, though. His recent form is solid, and he’s comfortably in the top ten going into this year’s event at the Ally Pally.
‘The Flying Scotsman, Gary Anderson, is one of the most experienced campaigners on the darts circuit. The 54-year-old lives and breathes darts, and he’s a two-time world champion, winning back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016.
Anderson usually saves his best for the World Championship, which is just as well, considering his last PDC premier event triumph came in 2018.
If you like to support the underdog in darts betting, let’s look at a couple of outsiders who have the potential to go deep in this year’s World Darts Championship.
Dave ‘Chizzy’ Chisnall is a fan favourite in the darts scene. He shot to stardom after knocking out Phil Taylor in the second round of the 2012 PDC World Championship. Since then, he’s been a regular in the latter stages of ranking events, and is just outside the top ten in the PDC World Rankings heading into this year’s World Championship.
Welshman Gerwyn Price is a fierce competitor and one of the most improved players on the darts scene in recent years. The former professional rugby player is currently ranked in the top 15 in the world and won the world title in 2021. Last year, Price lost to Chris Dobey in the quarter-finals, but he looked good up until his exit.
No tournament in darts is more popular than the PDC World Championship, especially from a betting point of view. Here are your betting options before and during this major event:
Before the PDC World Championship begins, most people will know the player or players they feel will be in the running to win the tournament. A small handful of players have usually enjoyed a great season and are right at the top of the odds list for this reason.
You can bet on the outright winner of the PDC World Championship before and during the competition, with the odds adjusted throughout.
Seven rounds are played at the PDC World Championship, which begins with round one matches and ends with the final. So, loads of matches are played between mid-December and the start of January.
Betting on individual matches is popular because there can often be big-priced upsets, especially in the early rounds, where unseeded players go up against some of the sport’s leading stars. It’s possible to bet on a player to win a match before it begins, and in-play betting allows bets to be placed on the outcome during play.
Every darts player dreams of throwing a nine-darter, and every person watching on dreams of seeing one live. But, while nine-darters are a rarity, throwing 180s is something you see more often.
The best players in the sport throw multiple 180s per match, and when you have two players meet who can throw regular 180s, it not only adds to the excitement but presents the opportunity to bet on who will come out on top when throwing 180s is concerned. It’s now one of the most popular betting markets in darts.
