The SPL is Scottish football’s top flight. Home to two of Europe’s biggest clubs in Rangers and Celtic, the annual Old Firm derby matches are watched by millions worldwide and consistently deliver drama and controversy.
Outside of the Old Firm, Hearts are building something special following recent board-level changes, while Hibernian, Dundee United, and Aberdeen have all improved in recent seasons and are threatening to challenge at the top end of the table.

The SPL is the top division in Scottish football. It is contested by 12 teams that play each other at least three times. Towards the end of the season, the league splits in half, and the top six play their final five fixtures against one another, while the bottom six compete against each other in the lower half of the table.
In the bottom six, the team in 12th place is automatically relegated to the Scottish Championship. The team that finishes 11th contests an exciting play-off with a team from the second tier. The winner of the play-off competes in the SPL the following season.
In the top six, four or five teams may qualify for Europe, depending on Scotland’s current coefficient ranking. The SPL’s European qualification structure is subject to frequent changes.
You may see Scottish teams compete in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, depending on their league finish and qualification progress.
Many people describe the Scottish Premier League as a two-horse race. The Old Firm clubs, Celtic and Rangers, have dominated proceedings since the mid-1980s and have significantly larger budgets than every other team in the division, primarily due to their massive fan bases.
The last non-Old Firm team to win the Scottish Premier League was Aberdeen, who secured the title under Alex Ferguson in the 1984-85 season.
Rangers were ahead of their bitter rivals until they were demoted from the SPL to the Third Division (now League Two) in 2012 for financial issues, allowing Celtic to dominate the top-flight for the following decade. The non-Old Firm teams were unable to lay a meaningful blow on the Hoops while Rangers were away.
However, Steven Gerrard’s appointment secured Rangers their 55th title and prevented Celtic from securing ten titles in a row, a feat that neither Old Firm club has achieved.
Following their big American takeover, Rangers fans are hoping that the glory days will return to Ibrox in the coming years, given how strong Celtic have been domestically in recent seasons.
Outside the Old Firm, Hearts are now part of the Jamestown Analytics group under the leadership of Tony Bloom. The Jambos will hope that with innovative, data-driven recruitment and stability on and off the field, they can challenge the Glasgow pair for the league title in the coming seasons.
