The St Leger returns to Doncaster on Saturday 12 September 2026, marking 250 years since the first running of Britain’s oldest Classic.

Current St Leger odds will appear above. Entries remain open until 11 August, with the field then moving through further stages before the final runners and jockeys are declared.

The St Leger Festival runs from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 September 2026. The main race takes place on Saturday 12 September, when Doncaster currently has seven races scheduled between 1.10pm and 5.20pm. The exact St Leger off-time will be confirmed closer to the meeting.

Doncaster’s Group 1 feature is open to three-year-old colts and fillies. It covers one mile, six furlongs and 115 yards, making it the longest of the five British Classics.

The race also completes the traditional colts’ Triple Crown after the 2000 Guineas odds and Epsom Derby odds.

Nijinsky remains the last horse to win all three legs, completing the sequence in 1970. A runner must possess enough speed to win over a mile at Newmarket, cope with Epsom’s mile and a half, then stay the longer Doncaster trip in September. Modern campaigns rarely ask one horse to attempt all three.

The 2026 betting picture is not settled.

Initial entries have yet to close, while York’s Great Voltigeur Stakes and other late summer races can still alter the market. A horse prominent in early August may be aimed elsewhere once connections assess its stamina, form and recovery.

Comparison markets currently contain names such as Pierre Bonnard, Hawk Mountain, Thundering On and Enceladus among the shorter-priced options. Exact odds have been left out because they can change throughout the day and may differ from the live prices displayed by Parimatch.

There’s another complication. Being quoted in the market doesn’t make a horse a confirmed runner.

Enceladus, for example, strengthened his St Leger credentials by winning the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood after an earlier success at Royal Ascot. Trainer Joseph O’Brien nevertheless said a Doncaster appearance was not yet certain.

Check the market rules before betting early. Standard ante-post wagers can lose when a horse doesn’t run unless non-runner money-back protection is explicitly attached.

Pierre Bonnard

Pierre Bonnard endured a difficult Derby but improved significantly when finishing third in the Irish Derby at the Curragh.

Doncaster’s flatter, galloping layout may suit him better than Epsom did. The remaining question is the extra distance. The Irish Derby was run over a mile and a half, leaving Pierre Bonnard to prove he can maintain that level for almost another quarter of a mile.

Hawk Mountain

Hawk Mountain won the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster as a two-year-old before taking the Prix de Guiche at Chantilly on his 2026 return.

He later finished third in the Coral-Eclipse behind Constitution River. That form demonstrates ability at Group 1 level, but the St Leger would require a major step up from approximately a mile and a quarter to nearly one mile and seven furlongs.

Thundering On

Thundering On earned her place in the discussion by winning the 2026 Oaks at Epsom.

Fillies are eligible for the St Leger and receive a weight allowance, although connections still have several possible autumn targets. Her Oaks victory established that she stays a mile and a half. Doncaster asks for more.

Fillies following the Classic route may arrive through races covered by the 1000 Guineas odds and Epsom Oaks odds.

Enceladus

Enceladus has progressed quickly since moving up in distance.

He won the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot and followed that performance by defeating Geryon in the Gordon Stakes. His strong finish at Goodwood suggested further improvement could come over a longer trip, but his trainer has kept other options open.

The live market should always take priority over an editorial shortlist, particularly before the official entries are published.

No trial offers a perfect preview of Doncaster. The useful ones tend to reveal whether a three-year-old is still improving and whether it may stay beyond a mile and a half.

Great Voltigeur Stakes

York’s Great Voltigeur Stakes is one of the strongest British St Leger trials.

It is run over approximately one mile and four furlongs, leaving runners to find another quarter-mile at Doncaster. Continuous completed the Great Voltigeur and St Leger double in 2023.

York is flat and galloping, which makes its form easier to connect with Doncaster than form from a sharper or more undulating course. Even so, a comfortable Voltigeur win doesn’t guarantee the horse will stay the Leger distance.

Gordon Stakes

The Gordon Stakes takes place during the meeting covered by the Glorious Goodwood odds.

Goodwood presents a different challenge. Its bends and downhill sections can unsettle an inexperienced horse, while the St Leger is staged on a broad, galloping track.

Enceladus won the 2026 Gordon Stakes, following previous winners including Jan Brueghel before his 2024 Doncaster success. That gives the form relevance without making it decisive.

The Derby and Irish Derby

Derby form deserves attention because the leading runners have already competed at Classic level over a mile and a half.

A defeat at Epsom can be forgiven when the course did not suit the horse. Doncaster lacks Epsom’s sharp descent, Tattenham Corner and pronounced camber.

The Irish Derby is another useful guide. Its galloping course can favour horses likely to appreciate the St Leger, although the additional distance must still be answered.

Royal Ascot Form

Three-year-old races at Ascot can uncover improving stayers.

The Queen’s Vase is run over one mile and six furlongs, close to the St Leger distance. Handicaps such as the King George V Stakes can also identify horses progressing quickly through the ratings.

Class is the next test. A strong handicap performance is encouraging, but Doncaster demands Group 1 ability.

Stamina

The final Classic is not simply a Derby with two extra furlongs added.

A horse must settle early, travel through the middle of the race and retain enough energy when the field begins to quicken. Those that race too freely may look comfortable for a long time before weakening quickly.

Watch the finish of previous races. A runner still finding after the line gives a different impression from one being held together as the winning post arrives.

Doncaster’s Course

Town Moor is left-handed, wide and generally fair.

Its long home straight gives horses time to build momentum, but it also leaves nowhere to hide. A runner that does not stay will be exposed well before the line.

The layout can suit long-striding horses that found Epsom awkward. That doesn’t mean every Derby disappointment should automatically be upgraded.

Ground Conditions

September weather can produce quick ground, rain-softened turf or something between the two.

Softer conditions increase the stamina demand. A sounder surface can help a horse with a sharper turn of foot, particularly if the early pace is modest.

Wait for official going updates before making a firm ground-based judgement.

The Likely Pace

A long race can still become tactical.

If no runner wants to lead, the field may travel steadily before sprinting inside the final half-mile. That can disadvantage a thorough stayer and favour a horse dropping back from quicker middle-distance races.

Several horses from one stable can also change the shape of the contest. One may be used to establish an honest pace for a better-fancied stablemate.

Current Form

Juvenile reputation matters less by September.

Three-year-olds can improve rapidly, regress after demanding spring campaigns or simply stop progressing. Recent performances should carry more weight than a highly rated two-year-old victory from the previous autumn.

The festival begins with Ladies Day on Thursday 10 September. Its leading races include the May Hill Stakes and Park Hill Stakes.

Friday 11 September features the Doncaster Cup, first run in 1766. The two-mile-two-furlong contest is the final leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown after the Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup. It is an important race in its own right, not a direct St Leger trial, as it is staged for older stayers one day before the three-year-old Classic.

St Leger Day follows on Saturday, with Sunday Funday completing the four-day meeting.

Win Betting

A win bet requires your selected horse to finish first.

The return is calculated from the accepted odds and stake shown on the betslip.

Ante-Post Betting

Ante-post St Leger betting allows you to back a horse before the final field is declared.

An early price may be larger than the race-day odds. In return, you accept the possibility that the horse won’t run.

Check whether non-runner money-back protection applies before confirming the wager.

Each-Way Betting

An each-way wager contains two equal bets, one to win and another to place.

A £5 each-way selection costs £10 in total.

The number of paid places and the fraction used for the place return depend on the live market. The old claim that every St Leger each-way bet pays one-fifth of the odds for three places was too rigid and has been removed.

Forecast and Tricast Betting

A straight forecast requires the first two finishers in the correct order. A reverse forecast covers either order.

A tricast extends the prediction to the first three horses. These markets are easier to assess after the final field, draw and likely pace become known.

Scandinavia won the 2025 St Leger for Aidan O’Brien and Tom Marquand.

He moved to the front two furlongs from home and held off the late challenge of Rahiebb, with Stay True also involved in the finish. It was O’Brien’s eighth victory in the race and his third in succession following Continuous and Jan Brueghel.

The St Leger was founded by Colonel Anthony St Leger and first run in 1776. It predates the Oaks, Derby and both Guineas races, making it the oldest of Britain’s five Classics.

The 2026 festival celebrates the race’s 250th anniversary.

Its roll of honour includes Triple Crown winners, Derby champions and horses that later developed into leading stayers. Logician holds the fastest winning time recorded at Doncaster, completing the race in 3 minutes 0.27 seconds in 2019.

Leading St Leger horses may later move into open-age races or be considered for major international targets. The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe odds cover one of Europe’s leading autumn races, although its mile-and-a-half distance places a different emphasis on speed.
