Who Are the Main Contenders for 2025’s King George VI Chase?

Three horses seem to be the talk of the paddock when it comes to the 2025 King George VI Chase contenders. The one name on everyone's lips right now is Gaelic Warrior.

This star chaser, trained by Willie Mullins, recently landed the John Durkan Memorial Chase and looks set to head to Kempton Park for a crack at the King George VI Chase this year. Other major talking points include Nicky Henderson’s rising star Jango Baie and Joseph O’Brien’s classy Banbridge, both expected to bring serious competition to the Boxing Day showdown.

Gaelic Warrior skipped the French Gold Cup earlier in the season but is being carefully campaigned this autumn to peak for Boxing Day at Kempton.

Meanwhile, Fastorslow, renowned for defeating the iconic Galopin Des Champs three times in his career, is also expected to line up for the King George VI Chase this year, adding extra intrigue to an already stacked field.

Trainer Martin Brassil said the race was on the hit list for the start of the National Hunt season. He was last seen in May 2024, when he landed the Punchestown Gold Cup with Fastorslow, beating Galopin Des Champs and Bravemansgame to the punch again.

Willie Mullins’ former point-to-point winner, Fact To File, is also likely to be in contention. He’s developed hugely under the tutelage of Mullins, culminating in victory in the Ryanair Chase at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, under jockey Mark Walsh.

The trainers to watch in the King George VI Chase

The number-one trainer to watch in the King George VI Chase is Paul Nicholls. He trained the five-time winner, Kauto Star, and three other two-time winners of the King George VI Chase. Nicholls’ latest win came in 2022, with Harry Cobden leading Bravemansgame to victory.

In the 21st century, Nicholls has been in a league of his own when prepping King George VI Chase winners. He’s had 11 race wins, with the second most successful trainer, Nicky Henderson, posting just three race wins in the 2000s.

The History of the King George VI Chase

The first King George VI Chase was held in 1937. It was named in honour of King George VI, a passionate champion of British horseracing. This National Hunt steeplechase has been held at Kempton Park ever since, although it was only staged twice before World War II.

The winner of the inaugural King George VI Chase was Southern Hero. Interestingly, he remains the oldest-ever steeplechase winner, ridden by jockey Jack Fawcus.

Following World War II and Kempton Park’s racecourse reopening, the King George VI Chase resumed in 1947. It has since been raced annually on Boxing Day as part of Kempton Park’s famous Christmas Festival.

In 1995, the King George VI Chase had to be moved from Kempton Park to Sandown as Kempton’s track fell foul to snow and frost. It was a similar story in 2010, and the race was also staged at Sandown in 2005 when Kempton Park was closed for redevelopment.

The King George VI Chase is a stiff three-mile test of stamina, raced right-handed around Kempton Park’s turf racecourse. It currently carries a prize purse of £260,050, with the race winner taking £148,098.

Is the King George VI Chase the best steeplechase race in British horseracing?

Although the King George VI Chase has a certain romance, given its festive scheduling, the number-one steeplechase in British horseracing is still the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

This is the headline race of the Cheltenham Festival, and it usurps the King George VI Chase in terms of heritage, as it was inaugurated in 1924.

King George VI Betting Tips & Strategy

Whether you’re a horse racing newbie or an experienced punter, these tips and strategies will help you pick winners ahead of the King George VI Chase this year:

Age is Important

Eight of the last nine winners of the King George VI Chase have been aged seven or eight, which tends to be the sweet spot for this race. Only two horses over ten years old have won the race this century – Kauto Star in 2011 and Edredon Bleu in 2003, so bear this in mind when making your selections.

Consider Grade 1 Experience

Most winners of the King George VI Chase have at least one Grade 1 victory under their belt before triumphing at Kempton Park. If you fancy a horse, check if they’ve won an elite race in the previous 12 to 18 months. We also encourage you to back horses with good stamina, as this is a challenging track with 18 fences to jump.

Don’t Rule Out Last Year’s Winner

Fifteen horses have won the King George VI Chase more than once, and in this century, Kicking King, Kauto Star, Silviniaco Conti, and Clan des Obeaux have won this race back-to-back. While some race previews mention how difficult it is to win a race consecutively, history suggests that previous winners typically do well in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day.
