How are The Ryder Cup Teams decided?

Each Ryder Cup team is decided by a points system, with a few spaces left over for the captain’s selections. The USA and Europe each put forward a team of 12 players. These are selected based on players’ performances in a number of competitions in between Ryder Cups and some of the captain’s personal choices.

The key difference in team selection is the number of picks the captain can make. For Europe, Padraig Harrington will only make three selections of his own and the remaining nine players will be decided in a points system. For the USA, Steve Stricker will select six players, meaning only half the team is decided on recent form.
