The BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) Award honours the most outstanding British sportsperson from the past 12 months. It’s a BBC award, presented at a ceremony in December, held at Media City in Salford, Manchester.
Recent winners are Keely Hodgkinson, Mary Earps, Beth Mead, and Emma Raducanu – will a woman become the fifth consecutive winner of the award for the first time?

This century, legendary winners of the Sports Personality of the Year Award include Steve Redgrave, David Beckham, Andrew Flintoff, Chris Hoy, and Andy Murray.
The decorated Scottish tennis player is the only player to have won the award three times, recognised for his outstanding contributions to British tennis in 2013, 2015, and 2016.
Henry Cooper, Nigel Mansell, Lewis Hamilton, and Damon Hill are the only other people to have won the award more than once since it started in 1954.
In the past few years, England’s Lionesses have been honoured at the ceremony, with Mary Earps and Beth Mead pipping cricketers Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes in 2023 and 2022.
800 metre Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson was honoured at the 2024 ceremony; the first award for an athletics star since Mo Farah won the gong in 2017.

The BBC announces the shortlist for the award a few weeks before the ceremony, usually at the end of November or the start of December. An ‘expert panel’ submits the shortlist of candidates, typically consisting of six sportspeople.
The public decides the winner of the award, and voting opens during the BBC’s live broadcast of the event. People in the UK can vote online or by phone for their preferred candidate.
Alongside the main award, the following categories are also up for grabs on the night:
While the shortlist is yet to be published, here are the sportspeople likely in the running for the 2025 award:
England women’s international forward Chloe Kelly is a major contender for SPOTY 2025 after scoring the winning penalty for her team in the European Championship final. She plays for Arsenal in the women’s Super League and is one of the most famous female football personalities.
She will hope to follow in the footsteps of Mary Earps and Beth Mead to become the third female footballer to win the prize in four years.
Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy is perhaps long overdue a SPOTY award, given his incredible career on the golf course. 2025 was a special year for McIlroy as he completed the career grand slam by winning the Masters at Augusta National, won an impressive victory at the Irish Open, and helped his side to a historic Ryder Cup win in New York.
If McIlroy clinches the award that many people believe he deserves in 2025, he’ll become the first golfer since Nick Faldo in 1989 to receive the accolade.
At the time of writing, British F1 driver Lando Norris is embroiled in an exciting battle with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to win his first F1 Driver’s Championship.
His title challenge with Piastri will likely go down to the wire, and if he pips the Australian, he could become the ninth Formula 1 winner of the SPOTY Award.
English rugby union player Ellie Kildunne is one of the best players in the sport and showed her capabilities throughout England’s successful 2025 World Cup campaign.
Though brilliant throughout the tournament, Kildunne wrote her name into the history books with a try-scoring contribution in England’s final win against Canada at Twickenham. She will likely be among the favourites to win the Sports Personality Award in 2025.
English darts sensation Luke Littler might have missed out at the Masters earlier this year, but in 2025, he has won the World Championship, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, and UK Open.
He’s one of the most exciting young sportspeople in the UK, and few would begrudge him the gong if he were recognised as the 2025 Sports Personality of the Year.
