The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world, having first been played in the 1871–72 season. It will be the famous Wembley Stadium that will once again host the FA Cup Final, with the two finalists meeting there on Saturday, 25 May 2024.

If you can’t wait until May, you can bet on every match in the FA Cup leading up to and including the final. The journey to the 2024 FA Cup final began back in August 2023, when the preliminary and qualifying rounds began.
The 48 clubs from League One and League Two entered the competition at the start of November, joining the 32 non-league sides who had made it through potentially six rounds of qualifying to reach the first round proper. Of those 80 clubs, 40 would make it to the second round, with just 20 reaching the third round.
At this stage, the 44 teams from the Championship and the Premier League entered the tournament, meaning 64 clubs competed in early January for a place in the fourth round. These clubs will be whittled down to eight for the quarter-finals in March, then to four for the semi-finals in April.
Two teams will ultimately reach the FA Cup final on 25 May 2024 and battle it out to lift the famous trophy.
The FA Cup, formally called the Football Association Challenge Cup, is the oldest football competition in the world. Just 13 teams entered the very first running of the tournament, with Wanderers beating Royal Engineers 1-0 in the final in 1872 at the Kennington Oval, now a famous venue for cricket.
There were some events that happened in this first competition that would be deemed very odd based on today's standards. For example, if a game ended in a draw in the early stages, both teams were allowed to progress to the next round.
In one instance, Glasgow-based Queen's Park could not agree on a date for their first-round match with Donnington School, so both teams were allowed to progress through to the second round.
In fact, Queen’s Park made it to the semi-finals without kicking a ball but then had to play Wanderers in London. That game finished 0-0, and a replay was ordered. However, Queen’s Park could not afford to travel back to London, so they had to forfeit the tie, allowing Wanderers safe passage to the final.
Today, it is common for more than 700 clubs to enter the FA Cup. In its 152-year history, the competition has only been won by 44 teams, with Arsenal boasting the highest number of wins at 14.
Last year saw a Manchester derby in an FA Cup Final for the first time ever, with Manchester City defeating Manchester United 2-1. Who will win it this year?
The FA Cup gives lower-ranked teams the chance to face some of the biggest clubs in world football. In a one-off game, anything can happen on the day, and there have been some recent ‘giant killing’ results that may inspire your FA Cup betting strategy:
Just three years before these clubs met in a third-round tie, Leicester had stunned the world by winning the Premier League in 2016 and had reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2017. At the other end of the footballing scale, that same season had seen Newport finish 22nd in League Two. When the sides met in 2019, there were still 74 league positions separating the teams. This did not matter to Newport, who pulled off one of the biggest shocks in the competition with a 2-1 win.
In 2015, League One side Bradford City travelled to Stamford Bridge to face Jose Mourinho’s Premier League table-topping Chelsea. The home side raced into a 2-0 lead and still led 2-1 with 15 minutes remaining. However, Bradford, who were ranked 49 places below Chelsea at the time, roared back with three late goals to stun everyone and dump their hosts out of the FA Cup. Chelsea even went on to win the Premier League that season.
With so many more FA Cup games still to play before we reach the final in May, there are loads of betting markets you can take advantage of in the rounds leading up to the showpiece event. You can simply bet on a team to win a match in the match-betting.
This is where you will bet on one team to beat their opponent. Although some of the odds on offer in this market might seem short, the ‘magic’ of the FA Cup and its famous giant-killing history means no results are assured. Can you spot a potential giant-killing result?
When the two finalists are known, you can bet on who will win the final, how many goals there will be, and whether both teams will score. Many markets will be available.
Currently, at Parimatch, you can bet on the outright winner of the FA Cup with odds at the head of the market currently showing as:
Liverpool | 7/2* |
Manchester City | 7/2* |
Manchester United | 8/1* |
Chelsea | 10/1* |
Newcastle United | 12/1* |
Tottenham | 12/1* |
