The next US presidential election is scheduled for November 7th, 2028. The winner of the election and their vice president will be sworn into office in January 2029.

The US presidential election occurs every four years and is decided via public voting and a system known as the Electoral College.

JD Vance

Donald Trump’s current vice president, JD Vance, is the favourite to become the 48th president of the United States of America. The Ohio native served as a military journalist in the US Marine Corps for four years before studying at Ohio State University for a degree in political science and philosophy.

A political career followed, and he was sworn into the Senate as a member of the 118th United States Congress in January 2023. In July 2024, Donald Trump announced JD Vance as his running mate, and the pair ran a successful campaign against Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

A conservative hardliner with views that many believe are controversial, Vance is the candidate that the Republican Party is likely to turn to as Donald Trump prepares to leave the White House.

Gavin Newsom

The 40th governor of California, Gavin Newsom, is the most likely candidate to win the Democratic Party’s ticket ahead of the US presidential election.

He first entered public office as a city supervisor in San Francisco after graduating from Santa Clara University with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Newsom is regarded as a progressive governor of California, championing causes like climate change, reproductive rights, and gun control. He has also received praise in many circles for his response to the wildfires in California, campaigning for increased aid for citizens of his state.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC for short) became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress when she became the representative for New York’s 14th District in 2019.

She’s regarded as a progressive, democratic socialist, championing green and progressive causes, such as universal healthcare and tuition-free college.

While some believe she’s still too young to run for president, she has many supporters, and if she falls short in the lead-up to the 2028 election, she will almost certainly run for the White House again later in life.

Josh Shapiro

Governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, is an experienced campaigner whom the Democratic Party might turn to ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

As governor, he has focused on boosting public education funding and reforming the criminal justice system, while working across party lines in a pragmatic and task-focused manner.

While he’s behind Gavin Newsom and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the early polls, he could be a good choice for the Democratic ticket, given his experience and relative popularity.

Marco Rubio

Former Florida Senator Marco Rubio is the current US Secretary of State, known for his conservative and populist stances on many key issues. He’s been tough on immigration and strong on national defence throughout his career, while encouraging free-market economics.

Although he has failed in past presidential bids, Rubio, now that he has his foot in the door of the US government, could be considered for the Republican ticket.
