EFL Trophy Outright Odds & Betting Markets

The EFL Trophy goes back to 1983 and was originally exclusively open to teams in the third and fourth levels of the English football pyramid. It was conceived to give lower-ranked clubs a realistic chance of playing at Wembley Stadium and is popular among fans of lower-league teams.

It has undergone several structural changes over the years, but the premise remains the same. The most significant recent change came in 2016, when category one under-21 teams were introduced to the tournament for the first time.

What is the EFL Trophy?

The EFL Trophy is a knockout competition contested by all EFL League One and League Two clubs, alongside under-21 teams from the English Premier League and EFL Championship.

Sixty-four teams enter the tournament at the start of the English football season. Forty-eight of these are the teams in League One and League Two, and they’re joined by 16 category one Premier League or Championship under-21 sides.

The tournament begins with 16 groups of four, organised regionally and split into eight northern and eight southern groups. There’s one academy team in each of the 16 groups.

The tournament is unique as there are no draws in the group stages. If a game ends in a tie, penalties are awarded, and the winning team receives two points, while the losing team receives one.

The top two teams advance to the knockout round, which consists of straight knockout matches all the way to the final. Again, if the scores are tied, no extra time is played, and penalties decide each match.

The only exception is the final at Wembley, where 30 minutes of extra time will be played before penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

The EFL Trophy final is usually held at Wembley Stadium on the second weekend of April.
