Today, the format begins with preliminary, first, second, third and fourth qualifying rounds. All of these are knockout games, usually played through June, July and August. The qualifiers from the final qualifying round will enter the group stage alongside the seeded teams who qualified directly through their respective league positions. 

The group stage features eight groups of four teams apiece. The top two from each group will qualify for the last 16, which returns to a knockout format. From here on in, things start hotting up through to the quarter and semi-finals, followed by the final.
