The rules around how to win a UFC fight are clearly defined by the sport's ruling body. Fighters work towards either a points-based decision win or a finish via knockout, technical knockout, or submission. Three independent UFC judges adjudicate all fights, each with a different physical viewpoint into the Octagon to assist with calls on different moves and submission holds.
Each fighter can receive a maximum of ten points per round (based on either three or five rounds, each lasting five minutes), in line with each judge's decision. To win the round on a judge's scorecard, a fighter must earn ten points with their opponent receiving less than ten. Judges make decisions based on different in-fight criteria, including the fighter's ability to:
Fighters are also judged on where they have spent most of the round. For example, how many seconds they have been pinned down to the canvas by their opponent. If both fighters stay on their feet for most of the round, the amount of successful strikes is the main judging criteria.
