How many teams get promoted and relegated in the Scottish Championship

Every season, the champions of the Scottish Championship will be promoted, directly replacing the team which finishes bottom of the Scottish Premiership. The clubs who finish second, third and fourth will then enter a play-off, along with whoever finishes second from bottom in the top tier. If any of the three Championship sides win the play-off, they will be promoted. However, if the Premiership side prevails, they retain their top-flight status and only the league champions will be promoted.

In terms of relegation, the system is the same. The club which finishes bottom of the Championship will be relegated to Scottish League One, while the ninth-placed side will enter a play-off against those who finished second, third, and fourth in the third tier. If the Championship side triumphs in the play-off they will stay up, if they lose then they will be relegated.

Scottish Championship Schedule and Matches

The Scottish Championship season usually starts in August and runs through to late April or early May. The play-offs then immediately follow the conclusion of the regular campaign, with everything normally wrapped up by mid-May.

In each Scottish Championship season 10 teams participate. The campaign is separated into two halves and clubs play each other four times, twice in the first half of the season, home and away, and then again in the second half. That means that all sides play 36 times, and there is a total of 180 matches across a season. And here at Parimatch, we’ll be there every step of the way. Whether it’s the hectic Christmas schedule or the end of season run in, we’ll have the Scottish Championship betting markets and odds that matter available to you.
