The history of the NCAA is the history of football in America. The game was first played and developed in the American college system, rather than by professional teams.
A version of football was played as early as the 1820s at Princeton and Harvard, but the first official American football match is thought to be a game between Rutgers University and Princeton University in 1869. From that time, the sport spread through US colleges with the rules evolving quickly, becoming the game we know today in the 20th century. The NCAA was founded in 1910, with the NFL not established until 1920.
The college football season usually runs from August to November each year. A massive 676 college teams currently compete in NCAA football, split across 3 divisions: NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III. The NCAA Division I is further split into two sub-divisions: the FBS and the FCS.
These divisions are then divided into conferences of around eight to 12 teams to keep competing manageable. The Division 1 FBS has 130 teams playing in 11 conferences, the Division 1 FCS has 127 teams split into 14 conferences.
At the end of each season, usually in December, the top four teams in NCAA football are entered into the College Football Playoff National Championship to decide which college is the champion that year. Louisiana State University Tigers won in 2019 and Alabama Crimson Tide in 2020.
