European Championship football is coming to the UK and Ireland.

Euro 2028 begins in Cardiff on 9 June and finishes one month later at Wembley. Between those dates, 24 nations will play 51 matches across England, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It will be the first men’s European Championship staged in Britain or Ireland since Euro 1996.

A strong squad does not remove the dangers of tournament football. One difficult last-16 tie or poor evening in front of goal can end a campaign that looked promising a few days earlier.

England

England will have home advantage if they qualify.

UEFA’s schedule gives them two potential group matches at Wembley and another at Manchester City Stadium. The semi-finals and final will also be played at Wembley, so England could spend much of the competition on familiar ground.

There is no automatic place, though. England must enter qualifying alongside the other host nations, and only two reserved positions are available collectively to hosts who fail to qualify directly.

Home support should help. It will also bring a level of expectation that few other countries have to manage.

Germany and Portugal

Germany and Portugal complete the leading group in the early Euro 2028 winner betting.

Both nations have won the European Championship before and regularly arrive with squads drawn from top domestic leagues. Their eventual prices will depend on qualifying form, the final draw and which younger players establish themselves during the next two seasons.

Every venue apart from Wembley will stage a round-of-16 match. The quarter-finals are split between Cardiff, Dublin, Glasgow and Wembley before the competition moves entirely to London for its final week.

Most nations will play their three group matches in different stadiums. The designated group heads are an exception and can be allocated pre-selected venues.

Should they qualify directly, the Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play all three group games in Dublin. Scotland would remain at Hampden Park and Wales in Cardiff. England’s planned route includes Manchester and Wembley.

The qualifying draw takes place in Belfast on 6 December 2026.

Teams will be divided into 12 groups containing four or five countries. Qualifying begins in March 2027 and continues until November, with every nation playing its group opponents at home and away.

The 12 group winners and eight best runners-up qualify automatically. England, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales all enter the normal group stage rather than receiving guaranteed tournament places.

UEFA has reserved up to two positions for the best-ranked hosts who fail to qualify directly. The remaining places will be decided through play-offs in March 2028, with the exact format depending on whether either reserved host place is required.

For bettors, qualifying brings another layer to the Euro 2028 odds. A country handed a difficult group may drift, while an impressive run can shorten its tournament price long before the final draw.

The familiar 24-team format remains in place.

The nations are drawn into six groups of four, with each team playing three matches. Three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw.
