Goodwood Racecourse in West Sussex, England, is the venue for the five-day meeting, which is lovingly referred to as Glorious Goodwood. Or, for commercial reasons, the Qatar Goodwood Festival. The prestigious flat horse racing meeting that spans the five days is usually staged at the end of July into August, which is the case in 2024, with the action beginning on Tuesday, July 30 and running until Saturday, August 3.

Heres a brief preview of each of the five days of racing at Glorious Goodwood. 

Tuesday, July 30 (Day One)

Other horse racing festivals often see the most prestigious race happen later into the week, but this isnt the case with Glorious Goodwood, where the iconic Goodwood Cup, or Qatar Goodwood Cup, takes place on day 1. Its one of the three Group 1 races staged at the five-day meeting. 

Wednesday, July 31 (Day Two)

Theres a £1 million prize fund available for the Sussex Stakes, the big Group 1 race that takes place on day 2 of Glorious Goodwood. For many, this is not only the race of the festival, but also the occasion, with many celebrities attending on day 2. 

Thursday, August 1 (Day Three)

Like day 2, day 3 is a significant attraction because its Ladies Day. But, running alongside the occasion is another Group 1 race and the final Group 1 of the meeting the Nassau Stakes. Its always a competitive renewal. 

Friday, August 2 (Day Four)

It may not be a Group 1 race, but day 4 of the Qatar Goodwood Festival stages the King George Qatar Stakes, which is a race where prestige is very much on the line in what is a high-stakes race across the flat. Day 4 is also a day where attendees can take in live music. 

Saturday, August 3 (Day Five)

Day 5 may be the final day, but theres a fun atmosphere from start to finish. As far as the racing goes, the six-furlong handicap known as the Stewards Cup is staged, with the day fitting called StewardsCup Day. Theres plenty of entertainment provided throughout. 

What Is The Main Day Of Glorious Goodwood?

As far as the racing goes at Glorious Goodwood, the main day will be very much dependent on which of the three Group 1 races takes your fancy. Group 1 races are stages on day 1, day 2 and day 3 of the festival, and either of the three days stand out for this very reason. In the eyes of many, day 1 and the Goodwood Cup or day 2 and the Sussex Stakes are the main offerings. 

How Many Races Are Ran At Glorious Goodwood?

There are three Group 1 races, which is the top-level of flat races, run at Glorious Goodwood. They are the Goodwood Cup on day 1, Sussex Stakes on day 2 and Nassau Stakes on day 3. 

However, over the course of the Qatar Goodwood Festival itself, and based on the 2023 meeting, there are usually a total of thirty-seven races run across the five days. Some days feature eight races, and some seven.
