Though it seems like we’ve only just finished the 2024/25 season, the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League is about to get underway, with the first round of qualifying fixtures scheduled for July 8th.

While six English teams will compete in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the competition’s history, several British teams must navigate tricky qualifying ties to make it to the competition proper.

Shelbourne, Linfield, the New Saints, and Rangers will all play Champions League matches in July, ultimately influencing their entire seasons before some of their rivals have even kicked a ball.

We look ahead to the crucial UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds and reveal how to bet on the action at Parimatch Sportsbook.

How Does UEFA Champions League Qualifying Work?

Four rounds of UEFA Champions League qualifying are contested between 8 July and 20 August 2025. This is essentially a mini-tournament between champions, seeded, and unseeded teams from European leagues.

While teams from top leagues in England, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France typically proceed directly to the competition proper, other teams from lower-ranked leagues, due to the coefficient system, must slug it out in a pre-season qualifying tournament, where the stakes couldn’t be higher.

The four rounds of fixtures are two-legged affairs, so if a team makes it from the first qualifying round to the Champions League first round proper, they must play eight fixtures before the tournament gets underway in September!

Here’s the schedule for the UEFA Champions League qualifying round for the 2025/26 season:

Round   First Leg Fixtures   Second Leg Fixtures
First qualifying round   8-9 July 2025   15-16 July 2025
Second qualifying round   22-23 July 2025   29-30 July 2025
Third qualifying round   5-6 August 2025   12-13 August 2025
Play-off round   19-20 August 2025   26-27 August 2025

Fixtures Involving British Teams

Rangers are the biggest British team in UEFA Champions League qualifying this season, and the Gers will enter the Champions League at the second qualifying round stage.

Ironically, Rangers have done wonders for Scottish football’s coefficient in recent years, with excellent runs deep into the latter stages of the UEFA Europa League. This is highlighted perfectly by their coefficient points (71.250) compared to Celtic’s (38.000).

But it hasn’t benefited Rangers, as they haven’t been able to win the league, thus failing to secure the automatic Champions League spot they worked so hard for in European competition.

Their rivals, Celtic, have benefited from this position, given their recent dominance of the Scottish Premier League. That said, the SPL Champions will enter the play-off round in 2025, due to a drop in Scotland’s coefficient ranking last year.

So, if Rangers are to dine at Europe’s top table in the 2025/26 campaign, they must do it the hard way, navigating six matches via three qualifying rounds. They begin with a tough test against Panathinaikos at Ibrox later in July.

Here are the three fixtures consisting of British teams in the first two qualifying rounds of this season’s UEFA Champions League:

  • First qualifying round: Shelbourne v Linfield
  • First qualifying round: The New Saints v Shkëndija

Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League Qualification

Though the Champions League qualifiers determine who will make it into Europe’s premier competition, these fixtures will also determine which teams make it to the Europa League and Conference League, depending on the respective results.

Here are some rules that may apply to Rangers, Shelbourne, Linfield, and the New Saints, influencing which competition they play in this season:

  • Winners of the play-off round advance directly to the league stage of the Champions League.
  • Losers of the play-off round go directly into the league phase of the Europa League.
  • Losers of the third-qualifying round compete in a play-off round for the Europa League.
  • Losers of the second-qualifying round enter the Europa League third-qualifying round.
  • Losers of the first qualifying round enter the Conference League second qualifying round.
