The opening day of the Ebor Festival is finally upon us. There is a real buzz around this year’s event with high-quality line-ups all across the week. Elsewhere, we have more flats action at Carlisle and Kempton, whilst Worcester hosts an evening jumps card.
NAP of the Day
And it is at York we head to for the NAP. The Juddmonte International has a star-studded 13-runner line-up for us to sink our teeth into. Appropriately labelled ‘international’ as the field consists of talent from Britain, Ireland, France, and Japan. Many are excited by the prospect of French star Calandagan who has impressed in his home country. Others, have suggested that the step down in trip will suit Ambiente Friendly well.
Nevertheless, I’m siding with the favourite on this occasion. City Of Troy looks to become the first horse to win the Derby, the Eclipse and the Juddmonte in the same season since Sea The Stars – arguably the greatest flat horse of all time. The Aidan O’Brien horse burst onto the scene last year when he blitzed his opponents over at HQ. Many were left disappointed, however, when he badly flopped at the 2000 Guineas. Since then, form has proven that City Of Troy simply needed the run out as he won the Derby in mesmerising style.
Many question marks remain over his superstar status. His Eclipse victory was less-than-impressive but Ryan Moore made the bold prediction that his horse would be “winning his next race by 10+ lengths”. It’s time for City Of Troy to prove the doubters wrong at York today.
