Grand National Previous Winners
I Am Maximus will return to Aintree in 2025 as the defending champion, but the handicapper has allocated him the heaviest weight ahead of the race, stifling his chances of back-to-back wins.
When he ran to victory in 2024, he secured Willie Mullins his first Grand National win since 2005, when Hedgehunter won under Ruby Walsh. Below are the previous ten Grand National winners, with details of the jockeys and trainers, as well as their starting price to help you pick your 2025 winner:
| Year | Horse | Starting Price | Jockey | Trainer |
| 2024 | I Am Maximus | 7/1 JF | Paul Townend | Willie Mullins |

Favourites for the 2025 Grand National
Here are the top five ante-post favourites for the 2025 Grand National:
Iroko 7/1* (10st 11lbs)
Though Iroko hasn’t had a great season so far, he won at Cheltenham two years ago and has significantly improved over the fences since then, with the Grand National as the long-term target. The seven-year-old, owned by JP McManus, is the current joint-favourite to win the 2025 National alongside Stumptown.
Stumptown 7/1* (11st 2lbs)
One of three likely runners from Gavin Cromwell’s stable, Stumptown, joins Iroko at the top of the ante-post odds. The eight-year-old won the prestigious Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham last month and may have peaked at just the right time for a shot at Aintree glory.
Intense Raffles 10/1* (10st 10lbs)
Trained by Thomas Gibney, Intense Raffles was magnificent in his 2024 Irish Grand National win at Fairyhouse last April and goes into the Grand National in good shape. In his last outing, the grey gelding finished second in soft-to-heavy conditions in a Class 1 chase at Fairyhouse, showing that he’s in good nick ahead of the National.
Hewick 10/1* (11st 7lbs)
Known by many as the Guinness-drinking horse, Hewick cost TJ McDonald just £800 and has captured the hearts of many punters ahead of the Grand National, reflected in his 10/1* price. The Irish bay-gelding might be a cult hero, but he’s in with a serious shot at Aintree, given his four wins from eight jump races this season.
I Am Maximus 10/1* (11st 12lbs)
Though I Am Maximus will carry the heaviest weight in the 2025 Grand National, he’s still one of the most fancied horses ahead of the big race. He hasn’t impressed since his Aintree win last year (he pulled up and finished eighth in his two outings since), but the Willie Mullins horse will become the first since Red Rum to win the Grand National under top weight if he triumphs in 2025.
Grand National Betting Tips
- Consider first-time runners: The last four Grand National winners (Minella Times, Noble Yeats, Corach Rambler, and I Am Maximus) were all first-time runners, so consider backing a horse making its debut.
- Avoid the top weight: The last top-weighted horse to win the Grand National was Red Rum in 1974, so avoiding this year’s top weight (I Am Maximus) could be a good idea.
- Back an Irish stable to win: Since 2015, Lucinda Russell has been the only non-Irish trainer to have won the Grand National, so think about betting on an Irish yard to win the 2025 race.
- Look beyond the favourite: The favourite or joint-favourite has only won the Grand National five times this century, so looking elsewhere for value could be in your interest.
