Has the 100-point barrier ever been broken in the Premier League? You bet it has. But what about the Championship, League One, and League Two?
Here, we reveal the teams with the most points in a season in each of the major leagues in England. We also introduce the biggest points hauls in other major European leagues before explaining how to bet on the future champions at Parimatch Sportsbook.
The most points in a PL season: Manchester City (100 points in 2017-18)
Manchester City are the only team in Premier League history to break the 100-point barrier. They achieved this impressive feat in the 2017-18 season, finishing the season with exactly 100 points and a +79 goal difference, which is also the highest in PL history.
When Liverpool won their first-ever Premier League title in 2019-20, they ended the season with 99 points and a goal difference of +52. This is the second most points accumulated in the Premier League era.
Interestingly, although Manchester United are the most successful team in PL history with 13 titles, they don’t feature in the top eight of the most points accumulated.
The 92 points United ended the 1993-94 season was their biggest haul as champions, eight less than their city rivals managed in their record-breaking 2017-18 campaign.
The most points in a Championship season: Reading (106 points in 2005/06)
Several teams have won the Championship title with over 100 points. Bear in mind that there are four more teams in the Championship in the Premier League, offering more opportunities to claim the points to break the 100-point barrier.
Steve Coppell’s Reading team are the record holders for most points in a Championship season. When they won the 2005/06 title, they amassed 106 points, the most ever in a Championship campaign. Goals from Leroy Lita, Shane Long, and Kevin Doyle propelled Reading to the Premier League.
Other than Reading, the following teams have also broken the 100-point barrier in the English Championship:
- Sunderland (105 points in 1998/99)
- Newcastle United (102 points in 2009/10)
- Leicester City (102 points in 2013/14)
- Fulham (101 points in 200/01)
- Burnley (101 points in 2022/23)
Premier League points in a season record holders Manchester City are also near the top in the Championship, having won the second tier in 2001/02 with 99 points.
Ipswich Town hold the record for most Championship points without winning the title – 96, when they finished behind Leicester (97 points) in the 2023/24 season.
The most points in a League 1 season: Wolverhampton Wanderers (103 points in 2013-14)
Wolverhampton Wanderers won the League 1 title in the 2013-14 season with a record 103 points, the highest ever points total in the division. They finished the season nine points above Brentford in second, with both teams now long established in the English Premier League.
Kenny Jackett was in charge of Wolves in a campaign that saw many memorable games, including Wolves’ sensational 6-4 win at Molineux over promotion-chasing Rotherham United. Leigh Griffiths, Nouha Dicko, and Bakary Sako finished the season as top scorers for the Midlands club.
In League 1 this season, Birmingham City, under Chris Davies, will have their eyes on the 103 points record set by Wolves in 2014. Birmingham City’s points record is 89, which they accumulated during the 1994-95 Second Division (now League 1).
After playing 33 matches, the Blues have 76 points this term. Therefore, they have thirteen league games left and can win a maximum of 115 points this campaign. Unless they undergo a significant crisis, we can assume that the Blues will break their 1994-95 record at the end of the 2024-25 season. They may even eclipse Wolves, bypassing their 103-point haul in 2013-14.
The most points in a League 2 season: Northampton Town (99 points in 2015-16)
League 2 is the only professional football league in the English Premier League that has never had a winner with more than 100 points.
Northampton Town hold the record after their 2015-16 title win under Chris Wilder. Northampton won the league with 99 points, finishing 13 points ahead of Oxford United in second place.
Looking abroad: Record-breaking seasons on the continent
Now that we’ve covered the English football pyramid let’s cast our eyes to the European continent to see which teams have amassed the most points while winning their domestic leagues:
- Ligue 1 (France): Paris Saint Germain are the record holders in France after winning the 2015-16 season with 96 points.
- La Liga (Spain): Both Real Madrid and Barcelona have won La Liga with 100 points. Impressively, they did it one after the other! Real won the 2011-12 campaign with 100 points, and Barcelona won the 2012-13 campaign with the same haul, proving their fierce rivals would not outdo them.
- Serie A (Italy): The impressive Juventus team of the mid-2010s has the record for most points in Serie A. The Old Lady won the title in 2013-14 with 102 points.
- Bundesliga (Germany): Unsurprisingly, Bavarian giants Bayern Munich hold the record for the most points in a Bundesliga season. They won the 2012-13 title with 91 points. This is all the more impressive when you remember that the German first division only has 18 teams, not 20, as in most other major European leagues.
- SPL (Scotland): Celtic hold the record for the most points in a Scottish Premiership season, when they won the 2016-17 title with 106 points. The Hoops went undefeated, winning 34 of their 38 matches in a memorable campaign.
