Next West Ham Manager Odds – Who is Likely to Replace David Moyes?

Julen Lopetegui has had a chequered managerial career to date, but the Spaniard is the favourite to take over at the London Stadium if David Moyes leaves this summer.  

He infamously left his position as Spain manager at the start of the World Cup in 2018 to take over as Real Madrid manager, but he was sacked after just 14 games in the Spanish capital. 

He resurrected his career as manager of Sevilla, leading them to a Europa League triumph during three years in charge. 

He then moved to the English Premier League and took the Wolves job, securing the Molineux club’s survival after ushering in an upturn in their fortunes. 

However, he left Wolves just before the start of the 2023-24 season, claiming a lack of resources to take the club forward.  

While Lopetegui’s credentials are impressive, the fact that he jumps around so often and can’t seem to get his feet under the table at a club might concern Hammers fans, who will be looking for a long-term successor to Moyes to build on their European success of last season.

Paulo Fonseca 4/1*

Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca is another candidate for the West Ham United job, though he is also attracting interest from Serie A. 

He is currently in charge of French club Lille, which is sitting fourth in the table and has a good chance of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.  

He has also enjoyed success in the past at Shakhtar Donetsk and spent a short time in charge of FC Porto and SC Braga in his native Portugal. 

Known for an attractive style of play and developing young players, Fonseca would be a popular choice for the Hammers, given the demands of their fans when it comes to nurturing young talent and playing football a certain way.

Gary O’Neil 5/1*

Gary O’Neil has done a brilliant job in his first season at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He took over just before the season started and has all but secured a mid-table finish for Wolves in a season that many expected them to be battling against relegation. 

O’Neil has drawn attention to the numerous VAR decisions that have gone against his team this season, and if they had been a little more fortunate, Wolves may have found themselves further up the Premier League table. 

O’Neil enjoyed a short spell at West Ham between 2011 and 2013 and could be a great choice to replace David Moyes, as he’s regarded as one of the best young English coaches in the game. 

However, given his excellent work this season at Molineux, he might not want to jump ship just yet, with an exciting summer ahead of him and the chance to rebuild his squad in the Midlands.

Graham Potter 6/1*

Given the tumultuous nature of Chelsea’s first season under Mauricio Pochettino, Graham Potter is probably feeling hard done by that he wasn’t given more time at Stamford Bridge. 

The former Brighton manager has been linked with practically every job that has come up recently, but he remains coy on whether he’s looking to return to the game soon. 

The potential vacancy at West Ham would likely interest Potter, and given that Hammers fans demand high-intensity attacking football, he could be a good fit, given how he had Ostersunds and Brighton playing during his respective tenures. 

If Potter is looking to get back into football this summer, he will surely be on West Ham’s shortlist if they part company with David Moyes.

Michael Carrick 10/1*

Former West Ham United academy graduate Michael Carrick is quietly going about his business in charge of Middlesborough in the English Championship. 

He had a great first season, leading ‘Boro to the play-offs, but this season things have been a little more difficult for Carrick, with his side sitting in eighth place and unable to make the play-offs this time around.

Like the other managers on this list, Carrick tries to play football the West Ham way, and he was a cultured midfielder during his time at Manchester United. 

Though he’s reportedly happy in the North East, Carrick may be tempted by the chance to return to the club where it all began for him, and he’s in the running to replace David Moyes this summer.
