Alex Neil was sacked after Stoke City’s abysmal showing to bottom of the table Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, and Potters’ fans will be hoping that the new man through the door will have a positive impact with their team languishing towards the bottom of the Championship.

Successive defeats to QPR, Blackburn Rovers, Plymouth Argyle, and then Sheffield Wednesday were the final nails in the coffin for Neil, who arrived in Stoke with lofty ambitions. Though City are a long way from their recent successes in the top half of the Premier League, their fans will be hoping that the next man in the dugout will take them back to the promised land.  But who’s the right man for the job?

Here are five bookies’ favourites that Stoke City might look at to replace Alex Neil at the helm.

John Eustace - current odds-on favourite at 1/2*

Former Stoke City captain John Eustace is hotly favoured to be given the chance to return to Championship management following his acrimonious departure from Birmingham City. The Blues parted company with the talented Eustace to appoint Wayne Rooney and have tumbled down the table in the weeks since.

Eustace did a brilliant job at St Andrews, keeping the Blues up against the odds while putting together a team that was hard to beat. These are exactly the qualities that Stoke City need right now, meaning that Eustace would surely be a welcome appointment at the bet365 Stadium.

Luke Williams - the underdog priced at 16/1*

Notts County boss Luke Williams has been linked with many recent jobs; such is the impact he has had at the County Ground since taking charge. He has County in the League 2 playoff places following promotion from the Conference last season, and many think he is ready for the step up the football pyramid.

His lack of experience at Championship level will likely cause some Stoke fans a bit of anxiety, but he’s a young British coach with an impressive CV. It remains to be seen if John and Peter Coates will take a chance on Williams at this stage of the season, but he’s certainly an appointment that would excite some sections of the Stoke City fanbase.

Tony Mowbray - with odds at 2/1*, can he bounce back?

Many were surprised when Tony Mowbray left the Stadium of Light at the start of December, given his impressive record at this level. There’s no doubt that Mowbray would be a good appointment at Stoke, and he likes to play an expansive style of football that would see some goodwill return to the bet365 Stadium.

The fact that he has only recently lost his job at Sunderland means that the Stoke vacancy might have come too soon for Mowbray. Still, if the City board act quickly, they can appoint an experienced manager with a proven track record at Championship level to steady the ship.

Michael Beale

Widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the British game, Michael Beale didn’t do such a great job as number one at Rangers. He was criticised for lacking a style of play, and the fans couldn’t get on board with some of his decisions, particularly as far as incoming transfers were concerned.

That being said, Beale has experience at the Championship level, and his QPR side played some nice stuff before he departed for Glasgow Rangers. Though Beale’s credentials are impressive, he might be deemed too much of a risk for a team that finds themselves amid a relegation battle.

Scott Parker

Former England international Scott Parker has had an up-and-down start to his managerial career. Though impressive at Fulham, his time in charge of Bournemouth didn’t go to plan, and he wasn’t particularly impressive at Club Brugge in Belgium.

Still, Parker is said to be chomping at the bit and would love to get back into management. Perhaps he could be the man to lift the Potters out of relegation trouble and make a late run for the playoffs in the second half of the season.
