Since several members of the Salford City board played under Sir Alex Ferguson, one of the most successful and longest serving Managers in British history, they often like to change their manager! Neil Wood is the latest Salford manager to lose his job, following his dismissal on December 27th after a poor run of results.
Some interesting names are on the Salford City manager shortlist of candidates to replace Wood, including a Manchester United legend. Let’s take a closer look at some of the men that Gary Neville and his colleagues might turn to as they look to bring some much-needed stability to the dugout.
Paul Hurst – 2/1*
One of the favourites for the job at the Peninsula Stadium is Paul Hurst. Hurst has recently enjoyed several successful spells in charge of Grimsby Town, twice leading the Boundary Park club to promotion. However, he was dismissed as Town boss in 2023 as the Mariners dropped down the League Two table.
He also has some less successful stints in charge of Ipswich Town and Scunthorpe United on his CV, which might be red flags as far as the demanding Salford board of directors are concerned. Hurst is also on the shortlist of other clubs currently looking for managers – including Hartlepool United – so Salford will have to act fast if they want to bring him to the club.
Ryan Giggs – 3/1*
Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs needs very little introduction here. The Welshman is one of United’s most decorated players, and he is a close friend of Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, and Nicky Butt on the Salford board. Recent legal troubles have soured Giggs’ reputation, but he enjoyed success as the manager of the Wales national team and is looking to get back into management.
Of course, Giggs also has a stake in Salford and is perfectly positioned to put himself forward for the managerial role. From the outside looking in, Giggs could be a savvy appointment. Still, given that Salford have had a recent high turnover of managers, it’s unclear whether he would be interested in taking the reins at the club.
Karl Robinson - 5/1*
Karl Robinson is an experienced Football League manager with long spells at Milton Keynes Dons, Charlton Athletic, and Oxford United on his CV. At MK Dons, Robinson masterminded a 4-0 cup victory over Manchester United, deemed the greatest result in the club’s history. He also led the club to the Championship for the first ever time.
He was unlucky at Oxford, narrowly missing out on the playoffs twice before being dismissed in February 2023. He then followed Sam Allardyce to Leeds United to try to keep the club in the English Premier Division at the end of the 2022-23 season. If Salford are looking for an experienced head coach, Karl Robinson could be the perfect fit.
Paul Ince - 8/1*
Another former teammate of the Class of 92 is Paul Ince, who has been out of work since leaving Reading in April 2023. Though he was a brilliant player, it’s fair to say that he has struggled in the dugout in his managerial career, with spells at Macclesfield, MK Dons, Blackburn, Notts County, Blackpool, and Reading.
The fact that Ince knows the Salford board well could work in his favour, but his appointment would undoubtedly be a risk for a team looking to gain promotion as they work their way up the football pyramid.
Dean Holden – 12/1*
Dean Holden is a Manchester native who has recently been linked to the vacant managerial position at Salford. He has managed Oldham Athletic, Bristol City, and Charlton Athletic. Though he hasn’t enjoyed great success as a number one, he is well respected for his coaching and made a name for himself as the assistant manager at Ashton Gate.
Though other candidates on this list are more likely than Dean Holden, he’s someone that the Salford board will be looking at as they look set to confirm their appointment sometime during the January transfer window.
