After a run of just three wins in 19 matches, the Hartlepool United board decided it was time to end John Askey’s tenure. Even Jeff Stelling – United’s most famous supporter – saw the writing on the wall and is looking to the future as the Victoria Park club look to a new manager to propel them up the National League table.
The fact that Hartlepool sit 18th in the National League table is unacceptable to the fans, given that many fancied them as one of the favourites to mount a promotion charge before a ball was kicked. But who is the right person to lead Hartlepool United up the table? Here, we look at the next Hartlepool manager odds.
Paul Hurst – 4/1*
Paul Hurst has been without a job since leaving Grimsby Town in October 2023, and he is the current favourite to take over at Victoria Park. Hurst has an impressive managerial CV, winning promotion with the Mariners in 2015/16 and taking Shrewsbury Town to the League One and EFL Trophy final during his tenure there.
However, he struggled when he was appointed manager at Ipswich Town and was sacked at Scunthorpe United after falling out with the board. On his return to Blundell Park, he led Grimsby from the National League back into the Football League, beating Solihull Moors in the play-off final. With recent success in the National League, Hurst could be the perfect man to turn around Hartlepool’s fortunes.
Anthony Sweeney – 6/1*
Anthony Sweeney is a legend at Hartlepool United, having served the club in various capacities. As a player, he represented Hartlepool more than 440 times before short spells at Carlisle United and Gateshead to see out his career.
As a coach, Sweeney has taken caretaker or interim charge of the club four times and could be set for his first full-time managerial position at Victoria Park. Currently, Sweeney is on the books at Hartlepool, and his role sees him working with the first team and the academy at the club. He would undoubtedly be a popular appointment with the fans, but Sweeney’s lack of first-team coaching experience may lead the board to question whether he’s the right man to save Hartlepool’s season.
Darren Sarll – 8/1*
Darren Sarll is an experienced lower-league manager who is also rumoured to be in the running for the managerial position at Victoria Park. He started his managerial career at Stevenage, where he helped the club avoid relegation in his first season before narrowly missing out on promotion via the playoffs the next time around.
He then went to Yeovil and spent three seasons at Huish Park, but he could not take Yeovil up before leaving for Woking. As was the case during his tenure at Stevenage, Sarll narrowly missed out on promotion with Woking before being dismissed for a poor run of results that culminated in an embarrassing FA Cup defeat to non-league Ramsgate. Sarll is looking to get back into the dugout, and an offer from Hartlepool would surely be too good to turn down.
Matt Gray – 10/1*
Former Sutton United manager Matt Gray has been mentioned alongside several Football League job vacancies, and he is someone on the Hartlepool United shortlist. He famously led Sutton United to the Football League for the first time in their history and enjoyed a superb first season in League Two. He was dismissed earlier this season with his side bottom of the pile, but he’s a young manager with a bright future ahead of him.
The fact that Gray worked wonders in the National League with Sutton will appeal to the Hartlepool board, who will surely be looking for a candidate with experience at this level to lead the first team for the rest of the season.
Lee Cattermole – 10/1*
A combative, aggressive midfielder in his playing days, Lee Cattermole has taken up coaching following his retirement from the game. Cattermole was appointed U-18 manager at Middlesborough in January 2022 but decided to leave the role to pursue the next steps in his coaching career.
Though inexperienced and untested at any first-team level, Cattermole is native to the North East of England and could see Hartlepool United as the perfect first role in management. Whether the Hartlepool board agrees remains to be seen.
