Cambridge United have had 2 managers leave them within the past half year.
Firstly, struggling League One outfit Cambridge United took the difficult decision to fire head coach Mark Bonner after almost four years at the Abbey Stadium helm. Bonner, who signed a ‘long-term’ contract with the U’s, helped Cambridge out of League Two to establish themselves as a League One club. But due to a lack of on-field progress, the U’s owner, Paul Barry, acted fast to remedy their slide down the League One table. Three consecutive losses left Cambridge hovering just four points above the drop zone, with some teams around them having a game in hand.
And now, another has left.
A couple months ago, Parimatch’s next manager odds showed Neil Harris as clear favourite to take over Cambridge United, and that prediction proved to be true. Unfortunately, what couldn’t be predicted was that he would leave the club so abruptly, filling in the position as next manager at Millwall 11 weeks after taking the Cambridge job.
So, let’s take a look at our odds once again and see if this time, something sticks.
Barry Corr – 5/1*
Ex-player for Cambridge United, the club made him development coach after his retirement in 2019, and thus began Corr’s manager career.
He managed St Neots Town club and managed to get them 2nd from the bottom of the Southern Central League all the way to 3rd place after 11 games – their biggest success story so far. He then bounced back to Cambridge as first-team coach and everyone’s looking to him to step up as he’s now been made interim manager not once but twice now.
Michael Duff – 6/1*
Former Swansea boss Duff, was third favourite for the Cambridge job last time out, but with Neil Harris out the way, he’s been bumped up to second favourite. Duff did an excellent job with Barnsley in League One last season and an even better one with Cheltenham Town, taking the Robins out of League Two and into the third tier as champions in 2020-21.
It’s Duff’s success with Cheltenham that’ll prove most intriguing to the Cambridge board. The Robins had one of the smallest operating budgets at League One level and continually punched above their weight, finishing 15th in 2021-22 before Duff’s exit for Barnsley.
Gary Rowett – 6/1*
Is it as simple as a case of swapping managers round? Neil Harris to leave Cambridge for Millwall, and Gary Rowett to leave Millwall for Cambridge?
Throughout his career, he has enjoyed spells at Derby County and Stoke City and four years in charge of Championship club Millwall between 2019 and 2023.
Gareth Ainsworth – 10/1*
His last managerial stint was at QPR, where he was sacked late October 2023 following a 2-1 crowning home loss against Leicester City. He is a relative outsider in our betting odds.
