Following a disappointing defeat to Stevenage, League One side Burton Albion removed Dino Maamria from the dugout. Speculation is rife over who will replace Maamria, but the Brewers will hope that his replacement will galvanise the squad and lead them up the table. But given Burton’s terrible recent form, who is the right man to take over at the Pirelli Stadium? Let’s take a look at Parimatch’s manager odds.
Gary Rowett - odds shifted from evens to 7/4* overnight
Gary Rowett started his managerial career at Burton Albion, enjoying success with the Brewers between 2012-2014. He then moved to Birmingham City before spells at Derby County and Stoke City, which led him to the dugout at the Den with Millwall, a position he held for four years before being sacked in October 2023.
Rowett has been out of work for several months since leaving Millwall, and many think that the time is right for him to return to the Pirelli, where he was popular both as a player and manager. He certainly has the experience to do a good job for the Brewers, and many fans would be happy with his appointment, given the current state of affairs at the club.
Steve Cotterill - overtaking Gary Rowett as Favourite at 4/9*
Steve Cotterill has managed nine teams in the English football pyramid, and he is a vastly experienced manager who often gets a tune out of his charges. He’s also known for his forthright opinions at press conferences, and he’s someone who is only too happy to speak his mind if things aren’t going well.
His most recent job was at Shrewsbury Town, a position he held for three seasons before leaving in the summer of 2023. Cotterill has enjoyed relative success in the lower leagues as a manager, and he might just be the man to steady the ship at the Pirelli. He also played 74 times for the Brewers between 1987 and 1989, so he’s another candidate who knows the club well.
Dean Brennan - 6/1*
Another name linked with the vacant Burton Albion job is Dean Brennan, the current National League side Barnet manager. He has been in charge of Barnet since 2021, and his team is in third position in the table. Though Barnet have been out of form recently (four defeats in their last five), they have gained plaudits for their style of play and their goalscoring exploits.
Brennan has never managed in the football league before, with all of his roles coming in non-league football with Hemel Hempstead Town, Billericay Town, Kingstonian, and Wealdstone. It will be interesting to see how Brennan does if the Brewers board think that he’s the right man for the job and whether he can make the significant step up to league football.
Mark Bonner
Rumours suggest that the Brewers are also looking at Mark Bonner as a potential candidate for the managerial position at the club. The 38-year-old took charge at Cambridge United in 2020 despite having no prior managerial experience. He had a brilliant first season in the dugout, helping the club win promotion to League One for the first time since 2002.
He’s currently unemployed and has been out of work since the end of November, but there’s no doubt that many clubs will be looking at the talented young coach while he remains available. Given Burton’s struggles at the bottom end of League One, the club might opt for a more experienced coach, but Bonner would be an exciting appointment for many of the fans.
Gareth Ainsworth
Gareth Ainsworth spent 11 years in the dugout at Wycombe Wanderers before moving to QPR, where he only lasted a few months in charge. Still, Ainsworth has a good reputation in English football and is looking to get back into the game after his disappointing spell at Loftus Road.
League One Burton Albion might just be the ideal job for Ainsworth to reset and return to the brand of football that he favoured at Wycombe. He offers experience and a unique approach to management that the Burton board might find difficult to turn down, should he be interested in the role.
