The dismissal of Dons’ boss, Barry Robson, after barely a year in charge at Pittodrie, has scarcely come as a surprise. After all, he has overseen just three wins in Aberdeen’s last 11 SPL matches, leaving the club in eighth place with a paltry 24 points from 21 games.

Despite this, the club remain in contention for the Scottish Cup and the hunt for European football next season, so there will be hope that the next appointment will reinvigorate a side that finished third last year.

But who are the key contenders for the job, and how are they being priced here at Parimatch? Let’s look at the next Aberdeen manager odds.

Neil Lennon (4/6)*

While former Celtic boss Neil Lennon has been out of work since leaving Cypriot side AC Omonia in October 2022, his odds of becoming the next Dons manager have plummeted.

He certainly has the pedigree to take over at Aberdeen, having previously led the Hopps to five top-flight titles, four Scottish Cups and a League Cup in two separate spells. He was also the last manager to lead Celtic into the Champions League round of 16, while he has won the Scottish Championship with Hibernian (2016/17) and Cypriot Cup in 2022 as well.

Combative and driven in equal measure, Lennon has won exactly 57% of his 568 matches as manager, while he managed to win 70.02% of his games in charge of Celtic across his two spells.

So, not only is Lennon a favourite for the role here at Parimatch, but he’s also arguably the most qualified and has the requisite level of experience. The question is whether he wants to take on such a seismic challenge, having been out of work for over a year.

Neil Warnock (6/1)*

Neil Warnock has also emerged as a candidate to replace the departed Robson, at least until the end of the season. While this may seem like a slightly leftfield appointment, Warnock is ideally suited as a temporary manager, while he’s also available after leaving Huddersfield in September 2023.

It’s hard to argue with the experience and know-how of Warnock, who has taken charge of 1,952 matches and a staggering 18 clubs since February 1981. He also has extensive English Premier League experience, winning multiple promotions during a managerial career that has now spanned four decades.

Of course, Warnock has a career win rate of 40.93%, but even this is relatively impressive, given the sheer number of games he has taken charge of. However, he only once managed to win 50% or more of his games at a single club, and this was during a four-match stint in charge of QPR in the winter of 2015.

Robson was sacked with a win rate of 40.82% at Pittodrie, so it’s unclear whether Warnock’s resume would be appealing to the Aberdeen board. However, he would provide a safe pair of hands until the end of the season and may be able to earn the permanent role during this time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (16/1)*

On the topic of leftfield appointments, former Molde and Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also among the favourites at a price of 16/1*. There has been plenty of football betting activity surrounding the Norwegian, who hasn’t held a managerial position since being sacked by the Red Devils in November 2021.

The suggestion is that the former United playing legend is keen to return to management, especially after a disappointing end to his Old Trafford tenure. However, he has been short of offers since this firing, with doubts over his managerial ability and tactical aptitude.

Still, he has a profile that will surely command the respect of the Aberdeen players, while his experience coaching Manchester United will have ultimately proved beneficial. He would also improve morale at Aberdeen (as he did when he first arrived in Manchester), while his preference for a counterattacking style of play would suit the Don’s playing squad.

At the time of writing, Solskjaer is considered something of an outsider to become the next Aberdeen boss. But he is undoubtedly in the running, while it should be noted that he has won 235 of his 442 matches as a manager and achieved a career win rate of 53.17%.

Betting on the Next Aberdeen Manager with Parimatch

Other notable contenders include former Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny, Alex Neil (sacked by Championship team Stoke in December), and current Dundee head coach Tony Docherty.

The latter is one of the few candidates still in work, while it’s interesting to note that you can also back current interim manager Peter Leven to be hired permanently at odds of 33/1*. However, Neil Lennon remains the odds-on favourite for the role, and the Ulsterman seems the best candidate overall.
