While some football fans don’t fully understand the UEFA Nations League, it’s a major European competition with a great deal at stake for the group and league winners.

Some teams might qualify for the 2026 World Cup via the Nations League, while four of Europe’s best teams will compete in a mini-tournament in Germany at the start of June for a piece of silverware.

Here, we look ahead to the UEFA Nations League semis and learn how to bet on international football at Parimatch Sportsbook.

A Brief Introduction: How Does the Nations League Work?

The UEFA Nations League competition was launched in 2018 to replace friendly matches between nations.

Rather than associations scheduling fixtures with other nations during international breaks, the Nations League provides meaningful matches against similarly ranked teams.

All national teams in Europe are divided into leagues based on their ranking. Each league has groups of three or four teams, structured as follows:

  • League A = four groups of four teams
  • League B = four groups of four teams
  • League C = four groups of four teams
  • League D = two groups of three teams

Based on each team’s performance, they can be relegated or promoted at the end of the Nations League group stage, with A being the highest league and D the lowest.

From the start of the 2024/25 season, the top two teams from each League A group progressed to a two-legged quarter-final. Then, the four winners—France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain—went through to the semi-final.

Why is the UEFA Nations League Significant?

European trophy. However, there’s more at stake than pride and a winner’s medal.

The Nations League allows some teams to qualify for the European Championships and FIFA World Cup if they miss out during the tournament’s normal qualifying phase.

Three teams can claim a Euros spot via the Nations League, which is achieved via a play-off system. Teams that finish top of their groups can enter the play-offs, but often qualify for the tournament outright.

So, it’s sometimes the teams that finish in runners-up spots in Leagues A, B, and C that get a shot at qualifying for the Euros via their Nations League performance.

When the Nations League is before the World Cup, as is the case at the end of the 2024/25 season, the four best-ranked Nations League group winners or runners-up will enter the playoffs with the twelve runners-up from the qualification stream for a place in the United States.

When Are the Nations League Semi-Final Fixtures?

The 2025 UEFA Nations League semi-finals fixtures are scheduled for June 4th and 5th. Then, the third-placed match and the final will be on June 8th.

All the fixtures will be held in Germany, at the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Stuttgart Arena.

Nations League Semi-Finals Preview

Germany v Portugal

In the lead-up to the semi-final in Munich, Julian Nagelsmann has overseen an unbeaten UEFA Nations League campaign, and the hosts will have home advantage as they welcome Portugal to Bavaria.

Germany are missing several big names, including the hugely talented Jamal Musiala, but Florian Wirtz should feature, and Joshua Kimmich is likely to win his 100th cap in Munich.

The unsettled Cristiano Ronaldo will almost certainly feature for Portugal, who secured a notable 5-2 victory over Denmark in the last round to make it to the semi-finals.

Influential Bayern midfielder João Palhinha will feature in the game on home soil and will look to impress after winning the Bundesliga last season.

While anything could happen in this one, Germany will fancy their chances in front of a packed Allianz Arena.

Spain v France

Spain have come on leaps and bounds since Scott McTominay put them to the sword at Hampden Park in 2023, improving under Luis de la Fuente to win Euro 2024.

They were fortunate to beat the Netherlands in the quarter-final, winning 5-4 on penalties in Valencia after a 5-5 aggregate draw. They will need to improve defensively if they’re to see off France in the semi-final.

Didier Deschamps has already announced that he will be leaving France after the World Cup, and he will see a Nations League triumph as the perfect build-up to the tournament in the US.

Like Spain, France had to rely on penalties to progress to the semis after a nerve-shredding win over Croatia at the Stade de France. Many believe that the winner of this fixture will go on to win the 2025 Nations League outright.
