It has been a remarkable start to the 2023/24 EFL Championship campaign for Leicester City FC, a Parimatch partner club.
After an unexpected relegation from the Premier League last term, the East Midlands club are in pole position for an immediate return to the top table of English football.
After the opening 16 games of the season, the Foxes currently sit top of the table on goal difference, ahead of newly promoted Ipswich Town. Leicester City FC have already created an eight-point lead between themselves and third-placed Leeds United, ensuring a much-needed cushion going into the winter’s hectic fixture schedule where two-game weeks become the norm.
But what’s behind this incredible run of form? Let’s examine the details.
Enzo Maresca has hit the ground running at the King Power Stadium
Leicester City FC were methodical in finding a long-term successor to former boss, Brendan Rodgers. After a lengthy summer search, Italian Enzo Maresca was recruited. The 43-year-old agreed to leave his role as assistant manager to Manchester City supremo Pep Guardiola, penning a three-year contract with the East Midlands outfit.
Maresca took little time to mould the Foxes in his own image, with the team adopting a controlled, possession-based style of play that’s suffocated many Championship teams already this season. Summer signing Harry Winks and homegrown starlet Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are Maresca’s midfield generals, acting as the lynchpins between defence and attack with consummate ease.
A strong start underpinned by a miserly defence
The fantastic start to 2023/24 for Leicester City FC is founded upon a watertight backline that’s conceded just ten goals in the first 16 games, the best in the league. The Foxes’ dominance of the ball has restricted their opponents to relatively few sights of goal, and they’ve only tasted defeat three times in 16 fixtures so far this term.
Much of the Leicester City FC defence has Premier League and international experience. Central defenders Wout Faes and Jannik Vestergaard are proven internationals, while James Justin is one of the most dynamic fullbacks outside the top flight. Meanwhile, Danish keeper Mads Hermansen is a hugely promising sweeper-keeper pushing fellow compatriot Kasper Schmeichel hard for a starting berth in the Danish national team.
There’s plenty of firepower within the Leicester City FC squad
The Foxes’ front line is also a fearsome prospect for EFL Championship defences.
Veteran striker Jamie Vardy is still a livewire with the nous and speed to play on the last shoulder of opposition backlines. Meanwhile, Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho and summer signing Tom Cannon offer plenty of goalscoring options. The latter was a big-money signing for Leicester City FC, securing the 20-year-old from Everton on a five-year contract.
Cannon scored eight goals in 20 Championship appearances last season for Preston North End, so Maresca knows Cannon can average a goal every other game in the right team.
Although no promotions are won in November, Leicester City FC have shrugged off last season’s disappointment in style. 13 wins from 16 games is the best start to a Championship season from any side, including the Reading side, which won the 2005/06 Championship title with a record 106 points tally.
