But there’s more to Duncan than football.

Everton Community Hero

During lockdown, the Everton hero would make many video calls for Everton FC’s official foundation, Everton in the Community. He’d spend hours of his time chatting to fans in the community boosting their mental health in the midst of a global pandemic.

Beyond the tough exterior there’s a warm gentleman inside that instantly takes you back, if you’re ever luckily enough to meet him.

My Grandad was Duncan’s chauffeur back in his first spell with the club in 1994.
I didn’t believe my Grandad until he brought an autograph home. I proudly showed all my mates in school.
Back then aged 13, he was the player I idolised and would proudly tell my friends “My Grandad knows Duncan Ferguson.”

Famous 1995 FA Cup Run

During the famous FA Cup run in 1995 I attended every match until the semi-final. I don’t think my dad could afford to take us both so I remember watching it on the TV dreaming of a FA Cup Final ticket after watching Daniel Amokachi run riot at Elland Road.

I vividly recall fans camping outside Goodison Park all night for a chance of a cup final ticket.
They were absolute gold dust.

As a father, your dream is to take your child to Wembley for the FA Cup Final isn’t it?
With my father’s funds running low before the semi final there was a very little chance of even a whiff of Wembley Way.

FA Cup Final Memories

Two days before the FA Cup Final my Grandad came home with an envelope. “There you go son.” He said to my dad.

Thinking back on it now my father must have sobbed when he received that envelope.

We won the FA Cup, we had the best day of our lives and quickly got back home on the Sunday just in time to cheer Duncan and the rest of the Everton squad on the open top bus on Scotland Road. The stuff of dreams, something one day, I hope I can do with my son too.

That was Duncan Ferguson and why he means so much to me personally.
Hundreds of reds and blues will tell you similar tales about Duncan across the city I’m sure.

Over the next fortnight or so we’ll get to witness the passionate side of Duncan as he aims to lead his Everton side out of trouble.

For years we’ve yearned for Grand Old Lady to be back to its brilliant best as Evertonians count the days down to the Bramley Moore Stadium move.
