The Main Talking Points from Round One

So, what have we learned going into UEFA EURO U21 round two? Here are the main talking points from the first matchday in Slovakia:

The Young Three Lions Look Sharp

Although Lee Carsley has had to deal with high-profile squad withdrawals, a scintillating display from Tino Livramento powered the young Three Lions to a comfortable 3-1 victory over Czechia.

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott scored the game’s first goal in the 39th minute from a Livramento cross. Then Newcastle United’s full-back smashed in another low cross for Jonathan Rowe to double England’s lead just after half-time. Charlie Creswell completed the scoring for England in the 76th minute.

England have started well in Slovakia and will be confident of making it into the knockout rounds.

Germany’s Woltemade Justified His Pre-Tournament Hype

Nick Woltemade, one of the hottest prospects in German football, justified the pre-tournament hype surrounding his inclusion in the U21 squad with three goals in his side’s 3-0 opening round victory over Slovenia.

The 6ft 6in Bremen native might not be the youngest prospect in the squad at 23, but he has already established himself as an important player for VfB Stuttgart, with 12 goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances last season.

If he continues in this rich form, Woltemade will undoubtedly add to his two Germany first-team caps and could lead the line for his nation in future tournaments.

Spain Survived a Scare

One of the most fancied teams in this year’s tournament, Spain left it late to secure a hard-earned 3-2 win over hosts Slovakia in their first-round match.

The Spaniards needed a 90th-minute winner from Valencia centre back César Tárrega, who ensured one of the tournament favourites got off to a winning start.

Marc Pubill and Leeds’ Mateo Joseph handed Spain an early 2-0 lead, but the hosts fought back and looked destined for a draw until the last-minute drama spared Spain’s blushes in Group A.

Previewing UEFA Euro U21 Round Two

England will be confident of securing their passage into the knockout rounds, and a win over Slovenia will be enough. It will make their matchday three fixture against Germany less important, so three points will be on the cards for Lee Carsley’s men.

After a disappointing 0-0 draw in their first match, Portugal and France will have something to prove in their games against Poland and Georgia, respectively.

Spain will secure qualification for the quarter-finals with a win against Romania, while Italy will also progress to the next round if they beat hosts Slovakia.

Group D is more evenly poised, with the Netherlands requiring a much better showing than they gave in their first game against Finland, which ended 2-2. They will face an exciting young Denmark side, who beat Ukraine 3-2 in a highly entertaining first-round match.
