Previous Winners & All-Time Gold Cup Champions

The CONCACAF Gold Cup is a relatively new international football tournament, with the first iteration launched in 1991. Forty-one nations enter the qualifying rounds, and 16 teams make it to the Gold Cup finals.

Incredibly, only three teams have won the Gold Cup: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Mexico are the most successful team in the competition’s history, with nine titles. The USA have won the Gold Cup seven times, while Canada won it once, in 2000.

Mexico will enter the 2025 tournament as the defending champions, following their triumph in 2023.

Of the other teams, Panama are the Gold Cup nearly men, having reached and lost three finals (2005, 2013, and 2023). Jamaica have appeared and lost in two finals (2015 and 2017), while weakened Brazil teams have also appeared in two finals (1996 and 2003).

The only other teams to have made it to the Gold Cup final are Costa Rica, Honduras, and Colombia, highlighting just how dominant the big three have been.

Here’s an overview of the records of the USA and Mexico in the Gold Cup since 1991:

Why is Saudi Arabia in the 2025 Gold Cup?

The short answer is that CONCACAF invited Saudi Arabia to participate in the 2025 and 2027 Gold Cups. This decision was announced in 2024, after Saudi Arabia was named host of the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

This is not unprecedented, as CONCACAF has a history of inviting teams outside the confederation to compete in the tournament. For instance, Qatar were the guests in 2021 and 2023, while Brazil, Colombia, South Korea, Peru, Ecuador, and South Africa have also competed.

Brazil were the first non-CONCACAF team to participate in 1996, but they sent an under-23 team and lost to Mexico in the final.

Despite these olive branches, no team outside of CONCACAF has ever won the tournament, so Saudi Arabia will be keen to make history in 2025.

Who Are the Favourites for the 2025 Gold Cup?

Defending champions Mexico are the team to beat ahead of the 2025 Gold Cup. Led by Javier Aguirre, the Mexicans head into the tournament as the second-highest ranked team, one spot behind the United States in the FIFA world rankings.

Given their relatively easy group draw, we expect Mexico to go deep into the tournament. The USA, on the other hand, have a tough draw at the group stage, but Mauricio Pochettino will be confident of making it to the last four, where a match-up against Canada is likely.

Of all the other teams, Panama could surprise a few, while Costa Rica are always dangerous. We also can’t rule out a Saudi charge on the title, with the guests keen to show the world what they’re capable of as they prepare for their showcase World Cup.
