Riot Games is about to release 2XKO, a 2D fighting game with playable characters from the League of Legends universe. It has been in the pipeline since 2019 and will appeal to LoL and fighting game fans.

Join us in this Parimatch 2XKO preview and look ahead to one of the most exciting free-to-play game releases in 2025.

What is 2XKO?

The best way to introduce 2XKO is as a 2D League of Legends fighting game. Initially launched as Project L by Riot Games, League of Legends fans can take control of popular characters like Darius and Braum in this free-to-play fighting title.

The game will be a 2v2 tag-team fighter. Players must select two fighters from the League of Legends ecosystem. As with all Riot games, the gameplay includes elements of strategy and skill.

Players can switch between their point (primary) and assist (secondary) characters via the tag system. The controls are pretty basic, but air dashes and jumps improve the mobility of the 2D characters.

While the game is still in development, we expect numerous modes, including arcade and VS, which are prevalent in most 2D fighters. However, League of Legends fans will be most excited about the online mode, in which they can compete against other players worldwide.

Which Characters Appear in 2XKO?

Fans of 2D fighter games usually have access to dozens of characters, be it in Street Fighter, Brawlhalla, or GrandChase. However, at the time of writing, we know that seven characters from the League of Legends world will feature in 2XKO.

Sure, more may be added before the game is officially released, but Riot has worked hard to ensure all characters have unique combative styles. Here is the confirmed list of the League of Legends characters that will feature in 2XKO upon its release:

  • Braum
  • Ekko
  • Darius
  • Ahri
  • Illaoi
  • Yasuo
  • Jinx

League of Legends fans will be pleased that the characters appear to showcase their LoL abilities and characteristics in their fighting styles. Further development is expected, but the footage from the Alpha Lab test events is certainly promising.

2XKO Alpha Lab Update

2KXO, under the guise of Project L, has been in development since 2019. Riot has run several Alpha Lab sessions to see what its community thinks of the game in its various stages, focusing on improving crucial aspects of the gaming experience.

The most recent test came in August 2024, with an online 2XKO tournament in Brazil and various events in France, Japan, Mexico, and the United States.

Before releasing the game (hopefully in 2025), Riot has confirmed that it will be working on the following after feedback from the 2024 Alpha Lab tests:

  • Boosting the opportunities for team play, given the love among the Riot community for the character interactions.
  • Decreasing downtime when characters get hit by combos. They will try to remedy this by creating powerful offensive options for fighters.
  • Improving controls and moving beyond one-button specials.

In an end-of-year press release reflecting on the 2024 Alpha Lab, Riot announced another playtest would be scheduled for Spring 2025, presumably just before the final game is due to be launched.

2XKO Release Date

Riot Games has not officially announced when this game will be released to the public, though we expect it to be widely available later in 2025. As mentioned, there’s another test scheduled for Spring 2025, so we can hope that a Summer or Fall 2025 release date is on the cards.

How to Play 2XKO in 2025

Riot Games has announced that 2XKO will be free to play. However, as is the case in League of Legends, the title will feature in-game microtransactions, allowing you to unlock new champions and cosmetic upgrades for all characters in the game.

Although Riot hasn’t confirmed this, the character-unlocking process will likely be similar in 2XKO to that in League of Legends.

Regarding platforms, 2XKO will be released on the Unreal Engine and playable on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.

2XKO as an Esport?

It’s far too early to say whether 2XKO will become a thriving Esport. However, it has all the ingredients necessary to succeed in this regard. First, it’s a Riot game. Riot is behind the biggest Esports ecosystem in the world, League of Legends, and certainly knows how to make a game work professionally.

If 2XKO is to become an Esport, it will likely draw inspiration from the Capcom Pro Tour, the home of the Street Fighter Esports scene. Street Fighter was one of the earliest games played as an Esport, and it inspired later releases like Tekken, Marvel vs Capcom, and Killer Instinct, which has all been less successful.

Another factor likely contributing to 2XKO’s success in the Esports scene is its characters already featured in the League of Legends universe. We expect many of the initial players of 2XKO to be League of Legends and Street Fighter fans, so the appetite will be there for the game to transition into the competitive world of Esports.

Ultimately, watch this space. If 2XKO becomes an Esport, we will offer odds and markets for all major matches and events, as for LoL events.
