Following Tyson Fury’s brutal sixth round knockout of Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium, the undefeated heavyweight confirmed his retirement from boxing. The 33 year-old has won every belt on offer throughout his eventful career, but could the possibility of a potential unification bout with Anthony Joshua or Oleksandr Usyk prove too much for him to resist?
There’s been plenty of discussion amongst boxing fans over the weekend regarding the future of the Gypsy King, with the main topic being his supposed retirement. Is it genuine, or is it just a tactic to make even more money from a future fight? Parimatch has surveyed 500 British boxing fans to get the publics opinion on the champ, discussing retirement, next opponents and a second unification…
The Last Dance?
Tyson Fury made it clear before his knockout of Dillian Whyte that his Wembley debut would be his final fight in the ring, something he later confirmed in his post-fight interview after treating us to his very own rendition of Don McLean’s American Pie.
The 33-year-old previously promised his wife Paris that the conclusion of his epic trilogy series with Deontay Wilder would close the chapter on his time in boxing, however, he just couldn’t resist a fight on home soil at Wembley.
Whether or not he’ll actually go through with his promise is another matter and it’s something that the public aren’t buying, with over half (53.60%, 268 votes) of the 500 surveyed boxing fans believing that we’ll see the heavyweight champion back in the ring again.
Fury took home over £25m after knocking out his former sparring partner Whyte on Saturday and coming out of ‘retirement’ to fight again would likely result in a purse that would dwarf his weekends earnings. Especially if said fight is a potential unification bout with one of Anthony Joshua or Oleksandr Usyk.
Is AJ v Fury finally going to happen?
It’s a potential fight that feels like it’s been discussed forever and it’s still yet to happen, but the public think that we could finally see it very soon.
Boxing fans have argued for some time now who would win if these two were to lock horns in the ring, but it’s something which has swayed firmly in Fury’s favour since AJ’s loss to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021.
The pair are due to face off this summer in a fight that would put the Ukrainian’s WBA, IBF and WBO belts on the line. It’s thought that the winner would face Fury if he does indeed come out of retirement, and boxing fans believe it’s Joshua who will be the man to take him on.
Over 73% of boxing fans that Parimatch surveyed believed that AJ would be the Gypsy King’s next fight, which would undoubtedly go down as one of the biggest, if not the biggest, in both British and heavyweight boxing history.
The money involved would be absolutely jaw-dropping, with Barry Hearn recently telling the BBC that the purse for Fury v Joshua could be well over the £100m mark. How can Fury resist that? The fans have spoken and believe that it’s only a matter of time, but no one can rule out Usyk following his incredible performance in the first fight.
The Immortal Gypsy King?
He’s already done it once after defeating Wladimir Klitschko in Düsseldorf back in 2015, and boxing fans believe it’s about to happen again.
Fury’s huge win over the legendary Ukrainian heavyweight ensured that he became the unified champion of the division, holding all four available belts, before vacating them back in 2016.
Now six years later, he holds one of the four available in the form of the WBC that he took from Deontay Wilder, with the other three belonging to Oleksandr Usyk following his dominant victory against Anthony Joshua last year.
Becoming the unified, undisputed heavyweight champion of the world would be an incredible achievement for Fury and fans believe that if he does indeed come out of his supposed ‘retirement’ it’s going to happen for a second time.
Over 75% of boxing fans (377 vs 123) believe that if the Gypsy King returns, he will come back to win all of the available belts on offer and retire undefeated. If it does happen, that is how you bow out of a sport as a true legend…
