PBC Fight Night Preview: What Can We Expect?

The mercurial Benavidez headlines this PBC Fight Night as he faces Morrell Jr. Join us as we preview the main fights on the card:

Benavidez v Morrel Jr Preview

Benavidez – “El Monstro” – will defend an imperious 29-fight unbeaten record as he faces Cuban fighter Morrell Jr in this headline bout.

Benavidez has 24 wins by KO in his professional career to date and is ranked as one of the greatest pound-for-pound boxers of the current age.

In his most recent fight against Demetrius Andrade, Benavidez won by a sixth-round stoppage, marking his second successful defence of his WBC interim super-middleweight title.

In Morrel Jr, he faces an unbeaten challenger who has gone 11-0 in his pro career so far, with nine KOs. With a distinctive south-paw stance, Morrel Jr will undoubtedly present a challenge to Benavidez, though the American is the overwhelming favourite.

Morrel Jr’s most recent fight came against Radivoje Kalajdzic at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles in August 2024, with the Cuban winning by unanimous decision to secure the vacant WBA regular light heavyweight title. It’s one of the titles up for grabs in this fight.

Figueroa v Fulton II Preview

The co-main event in Las Vegas sees Figueroa take on Fulton for the WBC world featherweight title. Two-weight world champion Figueroa – known as The Heartbreaker – first met Fulton in November 2021.

Figueroa lost on the night, and Fulton’s controversial decision win bred animosity between the two fighters. A rematch was always going to happen; it has just surprised many that it has taken almost four years to arrange.

In his most recent fight, Figueroa defeated Jessie Magdaleno to defend his interim WBC featherweight title, securing victory with a ninth-round KO in May 2024.

Since his initial meeting with Figueroa, Fulton secured several impressive wins, including against Daniel Roman. However, he lost his first-ever fight outside the United States when he met three-division world champion Naoya Inoue in May 2023, going down in the eighth to a technical KO.

There’s little to separate the two, but Figueroa will hope to avenge what he regards as an undeserved defeat from their previous meeting in 2021.

Cuello v Olivo Preview

Argentine Mirco Cuello has 14 wins from 14 pro fights, 11 of which were by KO. He last appeared in Las Vegas in March 2024, defeating Sulaiman Segawa in an eight-round match by unanimous decision.

His fight against Christian Olivo Barreda will likely be the toughest of his career to date. Olivo Barreda, or “Kiki” as he’s known, is the underdog in this fight, but the Mexican is more experienced than Cuello, and he’s on a two-match winning streak since losing the first fight of his pro career to Luis Nunez by unanimous decision in April 2023.

The Pick of the Other Fights

Also on the main card is the all-Mexican clash between Isaac Cruz and Angel Fierro, which we think will be the pick of the other fights. Cruz is a former world champion and will go ten rounds with Fierro in this super lightweight duel. Both men talked a good game before the weigh-in.

Two other undefeated records will be at risk on the night. Yoenlis Hernandez will look to protect the perfect start to his career in his fight against the experienced Angel Ruiz in the prelims, while Frank Zaldivar will look to end Curmel Moton’s six-match winning start to his pro boxing career.
